Crash - Can't Figure This One Out...

I don't think the CPU overclock is the issue, it's been stable for a year, and Oblivion always ran great. However -

Dropped my CPU back to 3.0Ghz, and using the latest nVidia beta driver, and using rivatuner to boost my fan speed on the GPU resulted in a stable vanilla game. I'm reinstalling FCOM now, will report back.

Thanks friends.

Yes, good call on raising your fan speed. Is a must. If I don't jack up my fan speed to 100% my GPUs cook at 75c
With the fan they won't go above 65c

This is in Arizona mind you. :nuke:

FCOM + BC + UL running smooth.

Next - quest mods, combat enhancers (deadly reflex, etc...) then graphics (textures, OBGEv2, etc...)

Looking good so far.

That's great. It really is true that overclocking can cause instability in some games more easily, Oblivion being one of those games. Some people manage it just fine, some don't. I don't understand the reasons for the different experiences. But, it's usually good advice to not overclock if you experience instabilities.

In my experience things do not all of a sudden stop working unless something changes. Microsoft updates update system files and dlls which can be troublesome. If you use the computer for other things than gaming, it is easy to make a change to a windows feature without realizing. But one of the more commens culprits is a bad sector on the disk. When these things happen to me I usually do a error check on the hard dive. That is not 100% sure so next would be to re-install all the files, as hopefully this would write the data to other sectors on the disk. If you have multiple disks, try installing on another disk.

Just another length I go through to explain the unexplainable. If I could explain it I would be making tons of money working for Microsoft.

Just another FYI, it seems that the overclock wasn't the issue (at least it doesn't seem to be at this point...) I've got everything re-installed and running smooth for a few hour-long runs.

My best guess is that my graphic card was overheating. The GPU is not something I ever overclock, but I think the last nVidia drivers (which they then removed because of fan control issues) was something that continued on my card after downgrading. Upgrading to the beta drivers, and manually setting my fan speed to 80%, and I'm running great now.

The heat problem would expain why it never seemed related to anything on screen or in-game.

Thanks everyone for your help!
