Dirty References in 'Atmospheric Balmora'

I run my load orders through mlox and never saw any indication of this mod having dirty references. With that said, I really don't know the first thing about removing references. I know how to check, but I wouldn't know a dirty reference from a clean one. Rather than trying to guess at it, I was hoping someone might have already been through this.

Well, mlox is mosly likely to complain about GMSTs, if it knows about them, but it hasn't been taught about all mods, so it might not warn you at all.

http://code.google.com/p/mlox/wiki/Tes3cmd is a program I wrote (still under development) that will not only tell you what dirt is in a plugin, but will clean it too. The command:

I just downloaded it and had a look. What a mess! This could really do with a good clean. If you know how to check and hopefully remove references you basically need to clean out all the vanilla statics, containers and items. All you really need to leave is the cells and NPC references. Everything else is dirty edits.

EDIT: ninja'd, but there are no GMSTs.

Those are things that could be called "dirty edits", that should be able to be safely removed. tes3cmd can do them all at once automatically, as shown by the command line I posted above, or you can load the plugin into one of the many plugin editors and remove that junk by hand.

Or you can just play with it as is. The only problem it might cause is if some other plugin changes one of those items intentionally, and you load atmospheric balmora later in your load order, then it will have the effect of reverting the item. This is often not a big deal, you probably wouldn't even notice unless you are a stickler for detail. But it occasionally make a difference, and some people are sticklers for detail.

I just like being sure that all the mods I use are nice and clean. I do it for every mod I make (although I haven't released any yet) and it may also decrease loading times.

One thing I forgot to mention that might apply here is concerning PL's Creatures x mod. It places a bunch of creature 'boxes' ( I think they were called), which are basically spawning points. Rather than have bugs and rats crawling all over Balmora like my last game, I decided to remove these spawning points. Could this be the reason for the dirty references?

No, because the original file is dirty as well. And deleting stuff wouldn't create references.

Ok. I'm trying to use tes3cmd (the .exe standalone version). I've placed it in my Data Files foilder. I have Windows 7 and mayeb i'm not the most pc savvy person out there. There is no Run option in Start, or at least i'm not sure how to access it. Any help?

I don't have Win 7, so I can't help you out.

If you don't know how to use the Windows command line, then my suggestion is to use one of the other utilities that can edit plugins.

It is weird. As I mentioned before, i've used AB a few times with no indication of dirty references. I also ran it through TESTool. I wasn't quite sure how to activate just that mod, so I unchecked everything in TESTool as well as Wrye Mash. I still have a way to go before all my mods are in place for a new game, so i'll keep my eyes open if anything comes up. Saint_Jiub, if you could let me know what you find, that would be great. So assuming TESTool removed most of the references listed above, it still says there's some dirty ones in there. I gathered from what I read that I just go in to the tool of choice and just delete these? I know there was something mentioned in the CS tutorial on removing DR's that I am to rename the things I delete. I'm still a bit in the dark as far as this situation goes.

Two ways to do it:

Using TESAME or Enchanted Editor, you literally just delete those 7 objects from the esp.

Using the CS, you can open the Details (from the CS launcher) and highlight the object. Press Delete on your keyboard to flag it as ignored.

Ok. That's very easy. This stuff always seems so intimidating to me at first. I'll do that right now.


Edit: For future reference, is TESTool a reliable tool to clean all of my .esp's? I know the dialog merging function is severely bugged, so I never use it. I was just wondering abotu the cleaning aspect of it.

I've been using the "Clean esp/esm" function for a long time, and have never had any problems. It does a good job of removing junk cells and similar things.
You just have to keep in mind that it is not a tool for precision. It also doesn't check for or remove "Dirty References." (meaning, accidentally altered objects)

I prefer Enchanted Editor, because the interface looks nicer. (colourful Icons)
But it's basically the same thing as TESAME.
