FalloutPrefs.ini reverting to default

Post » Tue Nov 09, 2010 5:49 pm

The new patch somehow solved the problem with adjusting your .inis, but somehow that totally messed up my customized hotkey remapping. Since the FalloutPrefs.ini is the only place where I can change the hotkey keys, the changes don't stay, as the Falloutprefs.ini always reverts back to default. I already manually turned of Steam Cloud function in Steam and have the latest patch installed, no changes. I also tried to do the changes in all of the 3 different .inis without positive result.

Any help on this?

Thanks

There is a default version of the FalloutPrefs.ini in the game folder I believe. You may have to modify both.

it's the same for me. every setting i change within new vegas will reset after a restart of the application... that horribly sux. everytime i have to redo this changes which isn't very comfortable. i know this might be a problem with steam cloud and/or a bug but is there a quick and easy workaround? thanks in advance ;)

Inis in Game Folder:

Fallout_default.ini
low.ini
medium.ini
high.ini
very_high.ini

Inis in MyGames Folder:

Fallout.ini
Fallout_prefs.ini

and the two .inis refering to the G.E.C.K

I'll try implementing the prefs.ini from FO3, Be back with results.

I left Steam in offline mode so I do not have the second patch but this was what I had to do.

I had to delete the falloutprefs.ini in "wherever"\Steam\userdata\"unique 8 digit number"\22380\remote (I also have Steam in offline mode, and Steam Cloud off. Though I do not know if either matters.)

Then edit the falloutprefs.ini in My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV

P.S.

Oh yeah, and you may have to go to the files proprieties and make falloutprefs.ini not read only.

Edit: That didn't work. I noticed that the Fallout_prefs.ini of FO3 only contains the preferences, while the Fallout_prefs.ini contains any info of the Fallout.ini+the preferences. I really need thoose hotkeys to be readjusted...i'm left handed.

I haven't been succesful yet in saving a modified .ini yet.

Fallout and Fallout prefs seem to be the same file...

Check the following out, this should prevent the game from starting the launcher first which seems to be responsible for the .ini reset thing.

Hey, thanks a lot friend. That finally did the trick. Just for reference, here's what I did:

1. Go to C:\...Steam\userdata\digit number\22380\remote and delete the falloutprefs.ini
2. Go to MyGames\FalloutNV and adjust/customize your FalloutPrefs.ini
3. Start the game, remap the keys
4. Get out of game and start again

Didn't set the prefs.ini to read-only

Thanks again, Kudos given.

No need for .bat files, the fix worked, thanks to @wolfpup.

Same problem for me.
I renamed the falloutprefs.ini in "wherever"\Steam\userdata\"unique 8 digit number"\22380\remote" as wolfpup suggests and the settings are correctly restored at the next startup.

Why the hell did they have to implement steam on a single player game.
This adds so many problems ...
(Do not answer this remark is off topic)
Please remove the steam dependance, please ...

[additional info]
A default settings is copied back to the above-mentioned directory at the next startup.
So next time you want to change a setting delete the file before.

Fallout_default.ini in the STEAM installation folder is the one to edit.

That rewrites the Read Only file in the My Documents folder.

The other .ini in the My Documents folder seems to do nothing
