Do I Need To Patch Fallout Trilogy

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 8:51 am

Got my Fallout Triology in the mail, and spent a few stressfull hours trying to properly patch it, only to end up messing something up on my laptop causing me to have to do a full system restore, and still having some trouble getting Norton Security to uninstall from my laptop like it was before. After that, I'm hung up on what to do. If I can just install Fallout 1 and 2 from the disk and start playing without any additional patches, great. If not, I think it's just gonna sit on a shelf and collect dust. I know trying to run it without any patches in seemed fine, but i skipped the first few cut scenes and all, but some odd color glitches (running on windows 7). Does that happen often, and how can I fix it ( and im only willing to attempt to fix it if it can be done from within Fallouts files, not changing my systems settings or downloading any mods or patches ). I only noticed it in the cutscenes and in the menues, but I didn't move after I got controll of my character, I just exited the game.

So, my questions are, can I play through Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 (don't care about Tactics) only patched to the extent they are out of the box without any game breaking glitches, and how can I fix these color issues?

I just bought it too. I would guess the Trilogy would have all the patches.

Small update here.

For some reason after fixing all laptop problems, and reinstalling Fallout 1 and 2, when I clicked start there was something called "Fallout High Resolution". I started it and it works perfectly without the color glitches. Great, thats solved. But Fallout 2 still has these color glitches, what do I need to do to fix them. I did download a high res mod before having to do all this to my laptop, but I deleted all files and such assoiciated with the high res mod.

Sorry for the double post, for some reason I can't seem to edit my posts.

Anyway, I took a GREAT risk (for me atleast) and downloaded a high res mod for FO2. Followed the instructions and set it to 16bit. Problem seems solved. I could go and check everything for FO1, because after me deleating these files it all doesnt make sense, but I'm just happy to be able to play, so I think I'll leave well enough alone.

So all I need to know is if there are any huge bugs I should look out for if I don't install any patches for FO1 or 2 straight out of the Trilogy box.

:tops:

First off, great job persevering through and fixing your issues! I always found something really satisfying when I somehow solve issues on my own--even if I have no idea what I'm doing! Anyway you'll want to download the official patch for both games before you begin playing. There's a pretty major issue with the car in Fallout 2 so yes, you really need to install these patches.

I would recommend installing Killap's unofficial patch as this resolves a lot of bugs that were left by the official ones.

For your second run through, I'd suggest his Restoration project, which unlocks some incomplete content, and recreates some cut content.

I said I'm not gonna download any of the patches, because last time it almost ruined my laptop and I had to revert it to the way it was the day I bought it. Fallout 1 sais its patched to 1.2 or something simmilar, and the same with Fallout 2. Is that acceptable? If it somehow breaks some side quests, fine so be it. Mainly I want to play the main quests.

I know where to get all the patches, but honestly your just wasting your time linking me to them and suggesting them. My very first post sais they're out of the question. I'd like to know what patch Fallout 1 and 2 are out of the box, and if that with the patch if it will run right.

P.S. I'm not sure if that is the right patch number they are, It's just a sort of guess from looking at some files and what the main screen sais in Fallout 2's case. I'm sure someone here has to know what patch number they are out of the box of Fallout Trilogy.

Yes, the game is completable without them.

However, I would strongly recommend them as FO2 in particular can be crashy without them; the chances of anything bad happening when installing them are very low, and if it breaks your laptop like that, well your laptop was already broken really except the symptoms were not visible to you.

It's a little over a month old and has ran fine, and still has. Always has AV software installed and scan for viruses on a regular bases. I think the problem stemmed from the patches being in a RAR file, and me having to download additional software to decompress them, etc.... etc...

I THINK my version of Fallout 2 is 1.02.25. I don't know if that up to date or not. I know when I go to my hard drive, program files, interplay, there is a Fallout 2 folder and a Fallout 2 1.02.25. Rather or not that means thats what version I have, I don't know. I think Fallout 1 is 1.3.4 by going through the same steps, so the Interplay has 4 files in it, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout 1.3.4 and Fallout 2 1.02.25, then it has another file for an unistaller. I've played around 4 hours of Fallout 1 today with no problems, but haven't started Fallout 2 and don't intend to until I complete Fallout 1's main quest. Are the games ridiculously buggy with those patches, or am I safe?

I didn't have to respond with an attempt to help or encourage you at all. I'm not a paid technician. Getting aggravated at another gamer trying to help you out is going to do one thing and one thing only: convince me to stop trying to help you. Good Luck. I hope you get it all worked out.

Well, at the risk of being shouted at for trying to help, ach, I don't care, nothing you can say will hurt me.

Stop being so afraid of patches. So you managed to screw up and somehow damage your Windows install, it happens to users like you. Try to learn from your mistakes rather than deciding to never visit the Internet again.

If WinRAR gave you issues, get a different archiving program! Dear gods, there's loads out there. I'd suggest http://www.7-zip.org/, although if it doesn't work out and somehow you manage to club yourself to death with your own laptop, please, don't blame me.

Patching things is a tricky process, but from experience I can say that there's no way in hell I'd play the original two Fallout games without patching them first. They're amazingly broken without them.

I really wasn'tattempting to be rude, and I don't think I yelled at anyone. I was just agravated because I'd spent hours trying to find a fix and the only response is stuff I had already tryed and hadn't worked, I apreciate your help of course. It came out wrong, and I apologize.

Edit: And since you both seem to understand the patches pretty well, do you have any informationi on rather or not it's safe to play them with the patches (I think) I have installed that I specified on the previous post?

There is nothing dangerous about any patches I know of which you get from the usual trusted sources. The only danger is in making your install unplayable if you do it wrong or making your save games incompatible if you attempt to patch after you've already started the game.

What's the most recent patch? One of my other posts in this thread say what versions I have.

Official patches for Fallout 1 is "1.1" and "1.02" for Fallout 2. I would seriously, seriously recommend using http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=704 though (not the Restoration Project Mod, I'd use that for your 2nd play-through). With Kilap's patch you don't even have to do anything--just read the instructions and the patch installs and does all the work for you. :vaultboy:

if you are going to be running a lot of older games, use a dual boot. i know vista made it easy to do this. so i think windows 7 will also. my current desktop came with vista but i am now using XP pro. you can partitian the hard drive for a dual boot. using dual boot will allow matching games with the OS that they were design to work with. less crashes that way.

Nah dual booting for a couple of old games? Use VMware instead if you want to run another OS in windows mode.

VM stands for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine, to run multiple operating systems in an emulated environment.

There are a few good programs: http://www.vmware.com/, http://www.virtualbox.org/ and http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/ for example.

What's the difference? Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcAhHplFseI

So in essence I can run MSDOS, Win95/98/ME/XP/Vista, Linux. You name it, on my current OS thnx to this handy piece of software. It's like a PC on my PC. Dunno how else to explain it! Lolz!

Dual booting is also a good solution though. Especially if you have an older PC or faster software requirements because emulation takes a bit more processing power. However to run a few DOS and old Windows programs on the systems of today it is not necessary to dual boot. Anyways it depends a bit on your computer specs, the OS you'll need, the software you want to install and personal preference; a dual boot + using VM is also an option of course. Whatever works best!

Another advantage is I can play Fallout 1, 2, Tactics or any of my favourite oldschool games in windowed mode and surf the net while I'm at it. Don't worry, there is a full screen option too! ;)
