Why does Fallout 3 uses bottle caps as currency?

There'd be bound to be a lot of coins lying around after an entire civilization was annihilated.

Why not just use the huge abundance of coins?

Though I agree, Bottlecaps feel a bit more 'Fallout' ish ;P

To be honest if something like Fallout 3 actually happened, people would use ammo and food for trading, it's tough to find but not to tough and everybody needs it. It would be, in my opinion, the perfect "currency" to use in a post-apocalyptic scenario.
