I think there should be an animation and a timer, especially for potions, it would add more diversity for potions. For example you could maybe make a large flask of a healing potion that takes 5 seconds to drink and heals you for 100 and another that takes 3 seconds to drink and heals for 60, then perhaps with a raging monster on you it would be better to drink the 3 second one if for example you spilled a bit of your drink each time you got hit, but managed to drink a 3 second potion without getting hit wasting no resources there, also a better alchemist could perhaps make a potion that is small but strong, healing 100 as you drink it over 3 seconds.
For long term effects like 30 seconds of healing you could maybe spend 3 seconds drinking such a potion that healed 90 over 30 seconds, or 5 seconds drinking one that heals 150 over 30 seconds, and of-course as a good alchemist you′d be able to make a 3 second drinking potion healing for 150, so you′d not run the same chance of getting hit while drinking losing perhaps 40% of the potion and its effectiveness.
Also there could be weak potions that are so small you can drink them in a instant gulp, but to make those strong you could perhaps need to be a master alchemist, and for "food" like meat... well you don′t eat a whole pork-chop in an instant, no matter how big your mouth is, you could perhaps speed eat it in 15 seconds but even that is pushing it, chewing on a flower could be instant however.
Well those are my thoughts on the subject.
