Money in Skyrim

Post » Thu Nov 18, 2010 7:17 pm

Personally, I never found money to be of much use in the past Elder Scrolls games, particularly Oblivion. It was just one of those little bits of loot I nicked from bandits' bodies. Looking back on savegames, I had very deep pockets: thousands of Septims, but nothing useful to buy with them.

Other than purchasing houses & occasionally getting weapons fixed, I never used to buy anything. & when I did, I always had enough. Not from grinding, but just by chance.

Perhaps in Skyrim they could make money more important. Make it less easy to find exceptional pieces of armour/weapons which render weapons shops almost useless.

Anyone else's feelings on this?

I see what you're saying, but it also raises another more important question
what sort of money will be in skyrim now that the septim empire has fallen?

I do like the fact that the better items should be extraordinarily expensive, I love how NV did it, it really made you work for the antimaterial rifle and grenade machinegun

I'd like to see some sort of trading system implemented so not everything had to be done in coin. It's hard for instance to sell a 10,000 septim artifact cause no merchant has that kind of money lying around. On the other hand, you might be able to trade an magic ring for a horse or something like that. Haggling could work the way it does now, and some items could have more value to some people than other. E.g. a count or other noble person might prefer jewelry over weaponry, while a weapon smith would take a weapon over jewelry etc.

I find it tedious to collect septims until I can afford a house, and it's also unrealistic to drag 100,000 septims around. Just trade stuff instead.

this may be why they're adding in mining and such, to give you a way to earn needed money.

I agree there needs to be more money sinks in the game. A better housing system (being able to own more property, and having more to buy for your house), paid fast travel, and better store bought weapons/armor are just a few possible ways to make money more important.
