The old fallout humor

Post » Fri Nov 19, 2010 12:26 am

What i missed the most in fallout 3 was the humor the earlier games had. not that all of it was funny but there were little references to all kinds of things
random encounter where all it had was a smashed corpse of a whale and a flower pot laying on the ground for example, in the sierra medical lab in a log of the guy saying he ate a liver from the guy with some farva beans and a nice chianti, the masticator and evan holyfield, juan cruz in the hubologists (one of my favorite references to those scientology freaks) i think fallout 3 was missing a lot of the little details that made the old games great
hehe the cafe of broken dreams was great too.

there's a lot of stuff like that in FO3, bro, it's just not RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. you gotta look for it.

the only thing i was really disappointed with was the lack of Doctor Who in Mothership Zeta.

How would that have fit in? a little blue police box aboard the ship?

a few robots going "Ex-Ter-Min-Ate" or "You Will be like us, Resistance is useless" (Although the latter would be confused for a Star Trek joke, but the Cybermen did it long before the Borg).

I had a good laugh when I convinced that jailer dude over in Vault City that his prisoner suffered from a new kind of contagious disease: The Iggy syndrom causing victims to talk too much and demanded to release him at once. Lolz... Iggy is my name in the game btw... Further trying to be as rude as possible to Joanne Lynette without jeopardising my VC's quests too much, going behind her back to become a VC-citizen then blackmailing the guy in the customs office for giving me the false citizenship papers. :P

I also encountered the "Bad Luck" dog. Jeez! Took me a while to put him down. Me and Vic got jinxed, whenever I tried to kill that bloody mutt my gun blew up in my face! Still that dog loved me and followed me everywhere. Encounters/battles were pure agony! Eventually I blew him to smitterins with a whole lot of dynamite! Although that dog was a pain in the bum being jinxed was still quite funny though!

It's a great idea for my next character, I never played jinxed before could be a very funny challenge in gameplay indeed.

Yup humor in the old series is 10+. Maybe a bit over the top sometimes, but it cracks me up in certain situations. FO3 however... hmmm... well... it has its moments but it's definitely not the same kaliber.

Oh totally! I haven't done an entire game that way (I know I really should) but I tested it out for a few levels and it's frustratingly hilarious!

I don't know how jinxed works technically in relation with my LK stat. Normally I would lower my LK so I can buff my other stats coz I'm jinxed anyway. Maybe with high LK I'll have less critical failures but does this go for my enemies as well? I dunno...

Anyhow my jinxed character has to be a brawler, melee fighter, perhaps a diplomatic nerd or some chem reliant type of person in this weird game setting because guns and explosives are an accident waiting to happen of course. :P

Yes, this will be quite funny! I have to put some thought in my skills and my other trade option however.

To get back on topic... The difference between the old series and FO3 is like reading a book and watching a movie. Reading a book I can imagine more stuff, while a movie takes all this imagination away and projects it on a screen. That's the difference and why I like FO1 & 2 so much!

Here is another funny dialogue I discovered today in New Reno:

- A poor child glares at me. On the remains of his shirt is scribbed "Cody"

One of the dialogue options is:

- Hey Cody, you want something? I've got some Jet here, Cody. You want to fly high with uncle Iggy?

- His eyes get wide and he runs away.

And I love father Tully, the drunk priest in New Reno. The poor sod pasted out on me after bringing too much booze. :P

Funny enough, there's actually quite a lot built into the whole interaction with Cody. Pretty subtle, but very well done. I won't give anything away--but I will say give different answers/questions in subsequent play-throughs and make sure you try the game with Kilap's patch and Restoration Project. ;)

Dammit! I knew it! I knew it!
There was something more going on with that kid. I gave him a nuka cola and he ran away. :(

I didn't have alot of speech options with "Cody" btw, even though my speech is 75%

It's bin a while since I have played FO2, bought it back in 1998. I'm using Killap's restoration kit for the first time, but I'm playing without any cheats or walkthroughs. It spoils the game in a way.

Oh well that's why it's called a RPG, whatever it was I'll have to look it up for my next run. :)

Cody's dialogue kicks off when your car is stolen. He's one of the potential paths back to the car.

Oh well... I got my car back in a more or less violent way, first off threatening Jules; he will lose his teeth if he doesn't remember where my [censored] car was. I need my wheels man! Don't steal my wheels, goddammit!

If you play with female character there is far more sleazier way than killing T-rex to get car back... and get some upgrades or fuel for highwayman... he might get heart attack in process.

I did it this way:

Spoiler
Talked Jules into showing where my car was. I had enough chips to buy the features from the chop shop dude, then killed him and Jules for stealing my car and stole my money back from his corps. Letting the rest of the chop shop boys flee the building. They just fled coz they where scared of my scoped FN FALL and my sniper skills, I guess. :P

Also because my character: "Iggy" is male. I'll keep it in mind btw, I already made an evil female jinxed/six appeal character for my next game with Killap's newest patch.

Regarding the stolen car, you can also:

Spoiler
Wait until you're a made man for Bishop and you'll get extra dialogue options for getting it back.

Thnx for the tip. :)

To return to the humor topic:

I encountered the bridge keeper yesterday who is a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Can't wait to find the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOrgLj9lOwk :P

I luv that movie hahaha, the "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIV4KLCmJ98", the "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCI18qAoKq4" or the crazy "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSo0duY7-9s" in the tower.

I think the humor in Fallout3 might be that some guy blows himself up intentionally, and some other guy blows himself up unintentionally. When I first encountered this suicide incident, I grinned hysterically.

Also the script writer might be messing with the people playing Fallout3 in a humorous way by the dialogue options that require intelligence, charisma, perception. But only intelligent, charismatic and perceptive people become aware of this situation. Very clever!!! It's like an inside-out concept. This must be the old Fallout humor still being present to satisfy the old gamers.

Three Dog: I fight the good fight with my voice!
Our Character: [intelligence] Ah, so you fight the good fight with your voice, eh?
Three Dog: I can see that you are very smart.
