Help Diagnosing Hardware Problem : IV

Lately I've been losing display and I am unable to get it back without restarting (the fans are still spinning though) whenever I play games or even if I let the computer go to the screensaver, the weird thing is it boots windows aero fine but games and the screensaver cause the display to go out within minutes. I thought it may be a driver problem since I recently upgraded to catalyst 11.2 so I tried uninstalling, restarting and reinstalling with no luck then I tried rolling back to 10.2 I think it was and did the same still with no luck.

So then I figured it was probably my GPU (radeon HD 4650) dieing so I ordered a new one and got a xfx 5830 (for a bargain price I might add $110 after rebate:)). But today I found that I also lose display within a minute or so when I play music and then the display cuts out and then after about 15 seconds the music cuts out too, I also tried booting into safe mode and after a few minutes the display cut out which I find extremely weird because it never cuts out when I do a normal boot as long as I don't run any games.

Now I'm a bit nervous because of it cutting out while playing music because I have integrated sound so I'm thinking this might mean the motherboard was the problem. I don't have much experience with computer hardware stuff so maybe you guys can give me some advice but right now I fear the worst I can replace a GPU easy, but a motherboard yikes I don't like the thought...

My guess is that your power supply is failing.

Check voltages with PC Wizard: http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

However, if the PSU is failing, continuing to run the computer will eat the GPU and CPU!

Let's put that in a more logical form, instead, shall we? Depending on the unit, there is a potential for a lot of lovely fireworks, showers of sparks, and a very evil stench of burned insulation. High quality power supplies, and those are in the minority, fail in a less spectacular manner, but it is in the nature of capacitors to fail over time, losing approximately 20% of capacity per year of usage. This deterioration is behind the popularity of greatly overspecifying PSU sizes.

When the more ordinary of power supplies do fail in the spectacular manner described, they may throw a large surge of current through the system as they do this, taking with them your Mainboard, processor, RAM, graphics card, just about everything in the tower can be destroyed at the same time. The odds are against quite such a major loss, you typically just lose the video card and the RAM.

Well while I was trying to update the video drivers to 11.3 I lost the display again and when I tried to reboot I got 1 long then 2 short beeps (no display at all) which apparently usually means video card failure. Tried to boot again and got one long beep not so sure what that could mean anyone have any insight on that?

I tested the ram one at a time and even with none at all and still get the beep and also without the vid card same thing :\

Fans and everything still spin so I don't think it's the power supply.

According to Gateway your comp has either a 300 watt or 500 watt PSU. Neither are of stellar quality.

I repeat, assuming you can get it run at all now, install a program like PC-Wizard, and check power supply voltages and temps!

Well I can't even get it to boot now so that isnt an option. But why would I even be able to turn it on at all if the power supply has failed? That just doesn't make sense to me. but as I said before I dont know much about this so I guess its a possibilty.

I also just looked up beep codes for AMI bioses and it says one long beep means POST passed all tests. Which is confusing because I get nothing on the display..is that also an indicator of a bad power supply?

Anyway the problem appears to be beyond me so I'll concede to my lack of knowledge and leave it alone. Ill just take it to a repair shop tm to see what the problem is and go from there. hopefully it is the power supply though i need a new one anyway for the 5830 i bought. Any suggestions on a good 500W PSU?

Ok got my PC checked out and the problem seems to be the graphics card despite the beep supposedly indicating memory or motherboard problems which someone over at hardware Canucks told me (I suppose the beep codes aren't completely foolproof). I guess it could have been caused by the PSU dieing though like you guys were saying.

Anyway I'm glad I already had a new one to replace it and if the PSU caused it well I need a new one anyway for the gpu.

Just thought I would post that in case someone else has the same problem.
