Enchanting revamp...

Do we have to use soul gems in enchanting? Can we try using other things, or is that too radical. Also if they added enchanting tools that would be nice.

Just soulgems I hope, probably at an altar or a mage who does it for you.

I think that the enchanting system from Oblivion is in need of a bit of refinement. For one, I hated how there were no longer any powerful enemies with really big souls, like Vivec and Almalexia in Morrowind.

Instead we had either a soul value of 150/300/600/1200/1600 and that's it, wouldn't it be more fun for some of the really powerful individuals in Oblivion (Mannimarco, Mankar Camoran, Umaril, etc...) to have really big soul values like 2400/3200?

It would allow us to make some really powerful enchantments, yet it wouldn't be overpowering because you'd first have to successfully trap their soul, and since they're unique you can only do so once. With other enemies, you'd be able to repeat the process when they respawn and if you regret making an enchantment you could always trap a similar soul. But since there are only a few unique individuals with higher soul values, and they can only be trapped once, you'd really have to be sure what to enchant with them.

And why not allow us to have multiple effects on clothing and jewelry too? We could do so on weapons but not on armor, it's not like it would be more powerful or anything. You're still limited by a set soul value, so you'd have to choose between a single powerful effect or dilute it over multiple smaller effects.

EDIT: And please, make the different soul gems look a bit more different from each other like they did in Morrowind. In Oblivion they had slightly different size and colour but that's about it.

This is an interesting idea, especially considering that there won't be any sigil stones.

Well it's not so much a new idea, it's how it was in Morrowind

No, I wasn't. Read the edit I did in my post. It explains further why I think it will be improved. :icecream:
I find it hard to believe the skills we do have in Skyrim will svck simply because we now have less skills than we had in Oblivion. Thus, my conclusion is they will work hard to make all 18 skills awesome.

Agreed. I think the reduction in number of skills was to allow more focus on the remaining ones, more attention to detail and intricacy. But that's just me. And that ^ guy. We shall see :)

The enchanting in Morrowind had two major problems:

1) The enchanting interface didn't give you any indication what your chances of success were. This lead to people trying to make the strongest enchantment they could possibly fit on the item, but that was often beyond their abilities. So they felt like self-enchanting never works. It also led to frustration whenever strong souls were lost.

2) Paying an enchanter to do the enchanting for you was better than enchanting yourself. It was expensive, but high level players got stinking rich so the high cost didn't matter. On the other hand they were always succesful and for some reason they could enchant the item with the spell effects that YOU had instead of with the spell effect that they had.

A third, albeit lesser, problem was that enchanting an item didn't change the gold value of the item and self-enchanting would cost you money instead of making a profit, unlike Alchemy which could be used to make a profit.

While the enchanting in Oblivion was at large less satisfying than in Morrowind, it did fix the problem of item value and the standardization of souls into 5 distinct categories instead of individual numerical values was a further improvement.

So if they take Morrowind's enchanting and fix the three problems I mentioned while maintaining Oblivion's two improvements it will be perfect.

I hated the way that the weapons you could make with enchanting in Oblivion were always more powerful than anything you could find (takes the fun out of exploring) and I hated having to recharge my sword. In short, enchanting was one of my least favorite aspects of the game. Things can only get better, but I'm still skeptical because I generally don't like the soul gem system, and I think they're unlikely to get rid of it with it being so rooted in the lore. (Though I do appreciate a lot of people like it - just my taste.)

They should take away soultrapping summoned creatures. Also take away looting your own summons body. Both are pretty cheap.

I think that recharging your enchanted weapon in Oblivion was so much better than in Morrowind where your weapon (an inanimate object) would recharge on its own yet you as a living being would not have your magicka recharge.
