Having trouble roleplaying

Post » Sat Dec 04, 2010 10:00 am

I'm having some problems roleplaying and need advice. (not one of those threads again! ;))

When you go camping or some other activity, do you use the wait function? For example when setting up camp do you wait 2 hours to signify the time it takes to do so? Or do you just sit around for 4 minutes of real time and imagine that you are setting camp?

I could also use some advice for player made quests, all I can seem to come up with is akin to "go loot this dungeon." Help with how to handle this would be appeciated.

I immediately use the Bedroll, and during the sleeping, Imagine that I set up camp, did some other things THEN went to sleep.

Well, Player made quests are harder to do. I sometimes do, Stalk someone in a city, then kill them undetected, or spy on Bandits/Marauders in a cave/fort/Ruin near a city, then report to the count/countess if they are a real danger or not, then using mods recruit some of the guard force, and attack them if they are a threat.

For camping, my character will eat, fix their weapons, read a book etc after they set up camp. I usually wait an hour to simulate the time taken to set up camp, then my character does any combination of the aforementioned activities before bed.

As for self made quests, they can be as complex or as simple as you like. I've had characters with massive self made quests that take many, many in-game days to complete. Likewise I've had simple "take this to there" quests within a town.
The artwork and fanfic forums are a wonderful source of ideas, as are the journals some of our characters keep.

If you're still struggling, feel free to drop a PM my way and I'd be happy to offer more in depth help.

My current character is working on an Encyclopedia type thing for Cyrodil, it's from his perspective so isn't the go to guide for definite information, he creates articles from experience, rumours, books he's read, ingredients he's found, etc. then puts all the tidbits of info together and forms an article.

When my character camps for the night, she puts on her comfy camp clothes, gets her camping stuff from her saddlebags and sets up her campfire, bedroll and stool. She then tosses a piece of venison on the fire while she sits and repairs/recharges her bow, checks her arrows, drinks a couple water potions (restore fatigue labeled 'Water'), and mixes up potions/poisons. Then she eats her venison along with some other food and drinks some more water. Finally she gives a couple carrots to her mare, slips off her clothes and crawls into her bedroll to sleep for the night.

Self-made quest examples:

1. Your old friend Baurus has asked your help to confirm the rumors of Mythic Dawn sleeper agents. You're pretty sneaky and clever, so you say sure. He gives you the sketchy documents on what the Blades know and asks you to try and identify the sleepers, find more of them and, um eliminate them if you are sure they are indeed working for the Mythic Dawn.

2. During your visits to Anvil, Countess Millona Umbranox has quite impressed you with her kindness. You feel badly for her lonliness and become determined to solve the mystery of her missing husband, Count Corvus Umbranox. You have always been kind to the beggers. . . perhaps they may know where to start.

3. During your Chorrol Mages Guild recommendation, the rogue mage, Earana quite pissed you off with her threats. During subsequent visits, it has become clear that it is only the city guard that stands between her and fireball in your back. Tired of fearing for your life each time you visit the city of the Great Oak, you decide to eliminate Earana - permanently. In fact, you are quite taken with the idea of her soul, sitting inside a black gem on your desk as a paperweight. . . .

4. During a visit to Pell's Gate, you learn of the plight of Lenwin, a wood elf who found an evil blade called Umbra that corrupted her spirit. You become convinced that if you somehow remove this evil blade from Lenwin without harming her, her life and spirit can be saved. You set about detailed planning that includes damaging the evil blade to the point where Lenwiin will put it in her pack, enabling you to pickpocket it. You believe that the sword can then best be fully destroyed by the lava flows found in the plains of Oblivion.

Angel has a mod that provides a tent, a campfire, a bedroll, and a camp stool. She sometimes uses abandoned camps also. Typically, she will set up her camp, munch a little food and then either read for a while or, on a clear night, she will search for a revenant moon or just stargaze for a while before sleeping.

She is a professional Alchemist. She prefers to gather her ingredients herself which requires her to travel all over Cyrodiil. Sometimes a ruin will pique her curiosity, otherwise she takes http://img203.imageshack.us/slideshow/player.php?id=img203/6199/12568608888hh.smil and wild animals.

I have used wait ("T" on a computer keyboard) for similar functions, such as...

  • ...giving myself an hour to eat and relax while sitting in an Inn after consuming drink and/or food. That seems a reasonable amount of time for such an activity.
  • ...allowing myself up to two hours wait on those occasions when I arrive too early for an appointment or other meeting and need to kill time. In these cases I generally must be sitting in a waiting area (think castle throne-room) or visit a local Inn if available.

I did this all through my first play-through, but find I dislike "wait" more and more these days. I now avoid it if at all possible and instead try to rely solely on better planning, time management, and finding real-time alternatives that make role-play sense in any given situation. In this I am now helped by traveling with Companion Vilja, who has all sorts of functions (shopping, swimming, eating, ingredient gathering, etc.) that can wile away game-hours without resorting to "T". For the budding magician there is also spell-skill practice, which my avatar prefers to do in the confines of a nearby Mages Guild Hall when available.

Sleeping is another matter. I've no reservations about it. In fact I often use "sleep" in place of "wait" since it makes perfect sense for an adventurer to get in an off-hour nap prior to, say, a late evening rendezvous.

Being a tabletop roleplayer myself (don't say I am good one but atleast I am one), this isn't that difficult for me, walk instead of run ... Make a 'rythm' like you have in you're real life, during daytime you go to school / to a job, in the evening you hang with you friends or something like that in the night you are sleeping - or whatever you're looking for ... Except if you play a vampire like character, or a 'thief / assassin' ...

Also there are lot of roleplaying immersion mods you might try out if you play on a personal computer ....

I currently have two characters. One of them is attempting to have everyone in Cyrodill like her at 100 (if at all possible) The other character doesn't like anyone and is determined to search every cave, fort, and elven ruin before seeking run of the mill quests as this would require her to talk to people.

I wonder what would happen if those two characters met. Would it be like matter and anti-matter, annihilating each other in a big explosion? ;)

My new character the Nameless One a Argonian, a Shady Argonian Assassin, who thinks he and the Argonians are Superior to all other races ... So he has no problem killing non Argonian Beggars at all ... That is the reason why I also hates the thieves guild ... And tries to avoid stealing ... And breakin' in to a limit (only doors) ... Ofcourse he also enjoys dressing himself up in different clothing, lucky for him clothes in Cyrodill are everywhere .... Just like lockpicks and food are ... :celebrate:

Lena (the chatty Wood Elf) would run up to Sonia (the angst-y Argonian) to say hi, she loves meeting new people you see. And Sonia would cast a silence spell on her sparing her...but only once. The next abrasive encounter from the obnoxiously perky Wood Elf would result in a great battle. See Sonia underestimates Lena, as most do. Lena is a master in Heavy Armor and blunt weapons. But Sonia is a Dark Mage with no scruples. Yeah I've spent some time with these girls lol.
