Wands in Skyrim?

Post » Mon Dec 13, 2010 7:51 am

Jesus Christ, are these idiots seriously still using the Harry Potter excuse? Wands were in some of the first tabletop rpgs and video games including Daggerfall, if they are different enough from staves then we have every reason to request for them to be in Skyrim.

Wands were not INVENTED for Harry Potter...they have been a part of history for years.

If I wanted to play Harry Potter, I'll just play one of my Harry Potter games.

If wands are included in this game, I'll just get it over with and make an Imperial named Ronald Weasley. 'Bout time he went out to save a world, don't ya think??

In fact, that'd be BADASS! Bethesda, include wands in Skyrim so I can make Ronald Weasley! I'll figure out how he managed to get from the UK to Skyrim. (Maybe he really failed at disapperating (sp?) and wounded up in another plane of existence? So now he has to work to get back? Damn, wands aren't even in the game and I'm making up a backstory as to how Ron got to Tamriel!)

If there are no wands, he'll just use staffs instead. XD

I would love to have battle staffs, like polearms except you know, staffs. Which can be assigned a spell which is amplified by 1.3 or so in power. It would be an ideal weapon for mages then. Use it like Gandalf in LotR3

Though the concept is ok, the purist in me says if they've never been in, they shouldn't be.

Apparently, they have. I've not played enough of Daggerfall to have seen one, but by other members' accounts, there were wands in the game. Besides, I just don't get this argument of 'there's no precedent for it, it's never been in any of the previous games, therefore it can't be in now.' By that logic, nothing new would ever be implemented into the games, we could only use things that were in previous games. But how do you think those things got there in the first place? Everything must be introduced at some point.

And, by the way, everyone: Since the very word 'wand' still seems to be getting everyone's feathers ruffled, they don't necessarily have to be literal wands. They could look like anything, I suppose, not just a thin little stick. There could be orbs, ornate scepters, gnarled wands, whatever. It's the idea behind the item that I'm interested in, some sort of magicka focusing tool to enhance the wielder's magical abilities.

This, I'm ok with. That would be good. I just object to little fairy sticks in the hands of my supposedly badass mage.

But that's the thing. Daggerfall was made long before Rowling wrote a little series called Harry Potter. Nowadays, almost everyone associates wizards and everything wizardry with Harry Potter. Bethesda probably wouldn't want to get their ass sued by Rowling and her fans for using wands.

Stupid, I know, but believe me. People most likely think Rowling invented the word "wands" even though that word and concept has been around longer than Rowling has been alive.

Sure why not. The obvious trade off would be Wands fire faster but either do less damage or have less charges.

like i said before, wands should be faster casting/weaker magic effect versions of staves, and wands can be dual wielded unlike staves

Just use wands to focus magicka for different effects such as: area of effect damage, longer duration, higher damage in general etc. but make it so that wands draw energy from your own magicka pool and not a soulgem. So basically my vision for wands are an enchantment that enhances a spell that you have equipped.

Wands would be great, yes I do love Harry Potter but wands are alot older than the Harry Potter saga, I would love to be able to duel weild wands that would be great for my mage what if you wanted a spellsword class wand in one hand short sword in the other I havent a clue why people would object to a wand it would be very good to add a new weapon and it would be great to have another weapon for magic based characters.

Its a cool one but I think maybe they mean drastically different looks from the normal ones we are used to that would be cool, but I like the idea.

Daggerfall had wands torcs bracers marks and heck you could even enchant torches and bottles.

It would make sense that with enchanting ability would come magical weaponry designed to use enchanting to power an attack... But I woudnt expect such items to actualy look like wands do. Id expect a magical gizmo that shoots stuff would be more durable and beefy looking with room on it for gems or bone/weird stuff used to make it more enchantable and or more durable.. id also expect any magaical weapon like that would be spendy.
