Random CTD's

Post » Tue Dec 14, 2010 12:28 am

Ok....
Basicly I recently reinstalled morowind and reduced my mod count from about 200 to 134..
Now I'm getting random ctd's.
The only warnings from "warnings.txt" are
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not able to find Foot part in BC_shoes_common_1.
Expression Error Unable to find object "@@@@ == 1mRKC_CrimeSpreadingl" in script RKC_TownSetup.

----------------------------------------------------
The foot part in bc_common is related to better clothes and with the rkc_crimspreading script, I DON'T want to disable RK criminals....
, anyway

The BC warnings are harmless and can be ignored. They only show up in Warnings.txt, and do not otherwise hurt the game.

The RKC error (Expression Error Unable to find object "@@@@ == 1mRKC_CrimeSpreadingl" in script RKC_TownSetup.) may not actually have anything to do with Regionally Known Criminals. When you see garbled errors like that (typically they contain a few "@" chars), this often mean that Morrowind's memory got corrupted, and sometimes if you just restart the game, the error goes away. So it would be good to know if you get this error consistently or if it only happened once.

Since I experience a similar problem right now (and don't want to start a new topic when there's already one), I beg you to help me.
I played a bit now - about 5 hours total (not in one go but over two/three days) - and I got some ctds from time to time.
First it was related to Census&Excise Office Mod where triggering the R Button to prepare a spell was a bad, baad idea, haha. But I kind of fixed that.
Before that I couldn't load a save game because Morrowind crashed again and again. Now it's the same - again ;).

I also had a look at my warnings.txt :

One of the files that "Divine_domina_part_3_Tribunal.esp" is dependent on has changed since the last save.
This may result in errors. Saving again will clear this message
but not necessarily fix any errors.
One or more plugins could not find the correct versions of the master files they depend on. Errors may occur during load or game play. Check the "Warnings.txt" file for more information.

Okay.. that isn't actually the load order but the mods I've installed.

Merged_objects.esp and MashedList.esp are at the bottom.
But I loaded Creatures, Races are more Fun and Birthsigns are more Fun.esp after Merged_objects.esp.

In my recent save game I'm in Pelagiad, standing at the front of the Halfway Inn.
I only get a short glimpse or can even only a short phrase until the game crashes and I find myself prompted to send or not to send an error message ;)

Before I posted this, I read that you can apply a 4GB patch to your system to allow Morrowind to get more than 2GB Ram. Unfortuneatly, I only have 2 GB Ram, so that doesn't solve my problem, right?

EDIT: I run Morrowind with FPS Optimizer v1.96 and have MGE installed (no distant land) with MWSE enabled. I also have Timeslip's Exe Optimizer v1.8..

Do you have time to bring up the console? If you can, try opening the console before it crashes, and "coc balmora", or wherever you like.

right.

Do you have the MCP installed?

Have you tried disabling MGE and MWSE mods first to see if you can load the game without external programs?

I've tried to bring up the console but the CTD too fast, so that's no option..

Yeah, I've MCP installed - unfortunately the game likes it to crash, I reckon :D

Disabling MWSE and running Morrowind without external programs such as MGE and FPS Optimizer only got me a loooot of error messages.
I don't even hear or see anything, it just crashes while it's loading the save game.

Would be kind of sad, if I had to start over again (keeping in mind that it could be the same problem afterwards, haha).
But I try too stay optimistic, soo.. what else could it possibly be?

Thanks for your effort :)

You can probably minimize the errors by disabling the MGE/MWSE dependent mods and cleaning the savegame first.

To do this, you could try de-activating the MGE/MWSE mods, (such as the Census and Excise plugin), the use Wrye Mash to sync the save game to new load order, do a "Repair All", then try running that savegame (back it up first, of course). The idea is to de-activate mods until the savegame can load, and thus identify if a particular mod is causing the problem. Then you can go back to your original savegame, disable just that one mod and see if you can get running without it.

Open your save with Enchanted Editor and delete the cell that you are loading into.

Wooooo...!
I actually was able to track down which mod gave me that CTD's:
Keyring.esp

Census&Excise and Pursuit Enhanced worked fine (separate and together) but
as soon as I added Keyring Morrowind crashes. (even if it was only Keyring without C&E or Pursuit Enhanced)
Although I disabled Keyring now, I get some error messages which tell me something about missing scripts/objects.
And yes, I repaired my save game in Wyre Mash ;). Guess I just have to make new save then to prevent this flood of error messages?

*sigh*
Never thought it would be the keyring mod. Seems that I have to live without this handy mod.

That usually fixes things up. Morrowind should be capable of cleaning most saves itself. Sometimes it needs a little help from Mash though.

Sometimes problems that happen with mods don't recur, so you could try it again, but it may just be a hassle, I don't know.

I suppose anything is possible, this is Morrowind. But I haven't heard much to support that as a likely cause of crashes.

It does seem odd, but on some custom models it CTDs for me if I stare at it too long under certain circumstances, it's very repeatable but it's weird it won't crash if you turn you back on it ocassionally. It's as if it's telling you to f off.

Maybe you could post a link to the model in question and one of the expert modelers might be able to tell if it's broken. If it's repeatable, then there's a chance of being able to find the root cause. It's the random crashes that are hard to track down.

Just a quick note to istaq. It's probably better to save in interior cells rather than exterior cells. If you find you cannot load a save made in an exterior, try loading the game with a save made in an interior, press the 'esc' key and load the exterior savegame you want to play. I don't know why this works, but it does.

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but is there such a patch for increasing the amount of Ram that Morrowind can use?

I agree with this idea, I had major issues when building a ship out of Daedric statics. When I tried to line the ship's deck in 100% using in_dae_rubble_01a objects, it crashed repeatedly, for reasons unknown. Once I removed 15 or so of these blocks, all was well. None of it was making any sense.

@ beryl:

Yes there is, sort of; it's the http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php.

. . . patches x86 executables in order to let them have 4GB (instead of only 2) of virtual memory on x64 platforms.

Please note that this is an .exe patcher designed for use on 64 bit operating systems. It is not Morrowind-specific. I have used it on sevferal games and gaming related files (such as Enchanted Editor, MGE, and TESAME) and though I never kept a log of crashes, I do seem to be experiencing less. One place I feel certain I am seing improvement is that MGE no longer crashes while generating distant land.

However, I also follow a regimen which includes using MCP, Wryemash, mlox, and TESAME to minimize mod-related CTDs. Also, I don't save in exteriors or heavily modded interiors, nor do I use quicksaves. I also make judicious use of the 72-hour reset when I begin seeing weirdness and occasionally delete problem cells and NPCs from my savegames using Enchanted Editor. The only reason I mention all this is that it would be impossible for me to pinpoint which factor is the real reason I don't suffer from random CTDs anymore. I would imagine finding the true cause of CTDs is just as unlikely as it is also a combination of factors.

By the way, by saying I don't experience 'random' CTDs, I mean to say I still get CTDs, I can just usually tell what I recently did to cause them.

It is quite random, but at the same time somewhat repeatable, though it doesn't happen on cue. I"d like that but first I've gotta figure which the several nifs it's composed of is the culprit init

I'm a simpleton, I have no idea. All I can say is that the vanilla blocks were crashing my game, until I removed some. This was my 4th ship model, so I was motivated to find a way around the crashing.

Well, Heres how it happens...
I'm playing normally!
and doing well pretty much anything (traveling usually)
and the hard drive light goes on and makes those hard drive in use noises
(anyone with a laptop would surely have heard them)
Then it crashes......
no warnings, no nothing....
just a CTD...................

That's pretty typical of a crash. What is important to know is how often it crashes, and if there is any pattern.

Morrowind just crashes every once in a while, it's a buggy game. Some mods will tickle the buggy parts of Morrowind more than others and increase the instability, but even vanilla Morrowind will just crash sometimes. So if you're only crashing once every couple hours, you're doing okay, all you need to do is save more often. If it's once every 10 minutes, that's probably not tolerable.

Does it crash outside or inside or both? Does it seem to be related to crossing cell boundaries? Is there any more of a pattern than it happens mostly while traveling?

Ha don't sell yourself short, you did figure it out.

Well I've managed to get to the bottom of my own crisis. Note to self: "optimize with Pyffi" is totally evil.
