From Fallout 3 to 1 and 2

Post » Tue Dec 14, 2010 2:22 pm

So yeh I bought the Fallout Trilogy pack awhile ago and I was thinking of starting to play them again. The only thing is, is it anything like Fallout 3? I have a few questions...

1. Does the story eventually pickup? I thought the beginning of Fallout was rather bland..

2. Can I eventually wear power armor and get a minigun (etc)?

3. are there traders and merchants?

4. What are the major differences from Fallout besides combat?

1. Yes, it's slow but it gives you way more than enough time to level up and get good gear.

2. Yes, and if a minigun doesn't suit you, you get an over-powered Gauss Rifle killing machine!

3. Yes, way more than there was in Fallout 3.

4. Better story, better humor, a car (fallout 2), useful companions, better weapons, in Fallout 2, only 2 people are in the BoS and they have little to do with the game, talking deathclaws, better endings, WAY more quests, and BoS and Enclave are better equipped. There is more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I once gave Fallout 1 (boxed with the manual) as a birthday present; Later (say a few months later), My friend decided to play it, and over the phone said things like, "He's blue!" and "Dude! Does he like change and stuff, if I pick up ####"
Some people don't know a diamond in the rough.

The thing about the early game in Fallout (combat wise), is that your PC will usually be outnumbered by closely matched opponents; The challenge is to survive by more than blind luck. Fallout is a game of details; pay attention to everything, and make a habit of always reading what the text box in the lower left has to say..

So basically its more like a semi turn based rpg? Theres a game operates similar to this one called Terra Phoenix on Funorb.com and I really enjoyed that one.

I was a bit confused by the character editor... So I'll just ask you guys lol.

What should my statistics be if I want my character to be a Heavy Power Armor Minigun wielding death machine?

Fallout 1 & 2 are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSpdpTmtnKk&feature=related [during combat]. The game 'Fallout Tactics' greatly improves the combat engine... (But the game is not really an RPG by most opinions).
It also puts in a realtime kludge described as continuous turns... but its (thankfully) optional.

Heavy weapons require at minimum a 7 for strength; However... Power Armor will boost your PC's strength when its equipped.
Go for Strength and Perception. Miniguns are a Burst-Only weapon so you'll only ever get to fire it once per turn.

As such "Fast Shot" may be a helpful trait, but beware, it means no aiming with single shot weapons.

You dont really get a chance to use big weapons at first, and power armour comes later on. I would invest in putting some points on small guns or melee just to get you through the first half of the game.

Strength is the only requirement for big guns, but perception helps you to aim properly. if you want to focus on combat, go for high strength, agility, perception, and endurance (in that order) at the expense of other non-combat skills. dont let your character have bad luck though, you'll miss your target and your gun'll blow up and end up hurting yourself.
I think there's a trait that lets you have one more point on each SPECIAL skill, thats handy.

back to your original questions though:

1. The storyline is really good! it might seem slow at first, as shady sands is a bit of a rubbish town IMO so get yourself to junktown, that way more fun!
2. yeah, the power armour and big guns come later on (second half) and they're really fun, esp the flamethrower.
:flamethrower:
3. there's at least one trader in each town, and you can barter with almost everyone.
4. main differences (other than graphics) is that the characters seem more well thought out, funny and interesting, the towns are better, the storyline doesn't spell things out for you so much, so you have to solve some problems yourself. and theres some cool cutscenes in there.

the endings better too. I'll not go into detail, but it tells you the impact of your actions on each town giving you a better feeling of how you helped (or destroyed) the towns individually. then you can keep playing if you want.

I'm having some trouble with the mission where you have to rescue that one Shady Sands girl from the Raiders to the south. I killed all of them but I can't find a way to open her cage :(.

How does Fallout 1's story start out slow, that's /my/ question. Compared to Fallout 3, it's super-fast paced! I mean, compare.

Fallout 1

Overseer: Well, our water chip's busted, and we'll be out of water and all die if you do not go out into the incredibly unknown and dangerous wasteland to try and find it. You've got five months, but since /God/ only knows what's left out there, you might need it all. oh, we're also only giving you this pistol, a knife, and a small health kit. Try not to die.

Vault Dweller: Um... why is there a skeleton in a V13 suit right outside the door?

Door Technician (Over intercom): Uh... look! Rats!

Fallout 3

James: Oh look, I have a child! Let us play out the abridged version of your life, where our main concern is shooting roaches, getting punched, and comic books.

Lone Wanderer: Okay!

Eighteen years later...

Amata: Wake up, your dad ran out to pursue the epic storyline and told the Overseer you told him to do it.

Lone Wanderer: I... didn't?

Overseer: I'm a meglomaniac!

Lone Wanderer: ... Eep.

Truly excellent games tend to age quite well. I still love playing Startopia, for example.
