Real Duck and Cover

Post » Wed Dec 15, 2010 5:47 am

I don't know if it's known, you guys are so passionate about Fallout that you probably do.

I was surfing the web and came across a video. It depicts (what I assume) is an actual instructional video with the "duck and cover" stuff. I thought it was really cool, just wanted to share it.

That video is so amusing knowing what we do now about nuclear detonations.

Good find. I hear form people all the time about how they had to do duck and cover drills in school.

Haha I remember my mom and dad mentioning Bert the Turtle once or twice before. Ahhh the 1950's what I would pay to have been alive then. :P

I love how you can see the shadow of the turtles eyes ahaha... Ahh technology back then.

That video just shows how paranoid America was back then.
Since when does ducking and covering protect you from the ensuing fire and radiation?

I think that the government produced that video so that the public would feel safer, not necessarily be safer.

If you're outside when a nuclear weapon goes off nearby you're out of luck, but if you're further away then ducking and covering may help, at least at initial impact. Yes, there's fire and radiation, but there's also a huge blast wave and our settlements tend to be filled with plenty of things that can break and collapse. Ducking and covering isn't perfect, but it is significantly better than nothing. Furthermore, it's equally valid in case of earthquakes.

It would be cool to see this in a fallout game as an easter egg!
