I don't think the player character's race matters in "Oblivion".

You were in prison so you can't be an Imperial because all Imperials are law abiding. :P

Absolutely no information is given about your character that would suggest any particular race is best suited, and the events which transpire in the main quest are things that could effect everyone in Tamriel, regardless of race, so I think you're right.

You were in prison so you can't be an Imperial because all Imperials are law abiding.

Ignoring the obvious sarcasm in the statement, pretty much every Elder Scrolls game starts that way.

I for vote Cyrodills, but who am I?

In my opinion humans (every race or "nation") are logical answer to your question; technically you can chose whatever race you prefer, your choice can't be wrong.

Any race will work. The main quests in TES are designed that way, although if you really want to know which race is most fitting for Oblivion's MQ, then it would be Imperial.

Furthermore, if the player character of one of the games is mentioned in a future installment, his/her race/class/real name is never mentioned. You're supposed to fill in those blanks yourself.

As other will/have reiterated, race doesn't matter. If it did, it wouldn't let you choose.

I don't know, all those lakes of lava and fire-throwing scamps and flame atronachs, not to mention all the mines and turrets, sure make a Dunmer's fire retardant hide a blessing.

But that, in no way, makes it lore correct, of course...

No, but it damned sure makes the game a LOT easier. Dunmeri assassin, customized class to take full advantage of the dunmer's natural talents, combined with the sign of the mage to make up for the lack of magicka inherant in the dunmer blood. Yup. Easy as pie.

Lore-wise, any race fits. Difficulty-wise, dunmer. "Picture on the ad's"-wise... imperial. Possibly breton. Dude doesn't look like a nord. Definitely a white-guy, though. Just let the game sit until the demo comes on with Uriel talking about the closing years of the 3rd era or some crap, and you'll see a white guy in armor. If that helps, go for it. But I warn you, lore correct or not, imperials svck. (my personal opinion, you might like them)
