Daggerfall--Things you love, Things you loathe

Post » Fri Dec 24, 2010 12:57 pm

I played Daggerfall when it first came out, and it was my introduction to the series. Once I get the DOSbox thing squared away, i'll get to know it all over again. Anyway, here is my list.

Love...

The music. Especially if you have one of the better sound cards. The music was incredibly beautiful.

The lore and the books, even though some of the lore got scrapped or ret-conned in later games.

No censorship. The game was made for advlts, though it had an option to make it more kid friendly.

The dungeon names never failed to amuse me. Names like 'The Screaming Castle', 'The Flying Guard', or 'The Djinn and Troll'. Well, they amuse me, anyway.

it could be very challenging, with little to no hand-holding or direction.

The King of Worms and the Dark Brotherhood were genuinely menacing figures.

Hate...

The donkey-loving rassa frackin' dungeons. Holy crap, who designed those things? Sheogorath? I was so GLAD they changed that in Morrowind.

The bugs. Enough said.

The Void. (though it can be useful)

'Halt! Halt! Halt!'

I love the dungeons, the void, and especially Halt Halt Halt. And bugs? What bugs?

Daggerfall is pretty near a perfect game for me, the only wish is that it was on a handheld or something.

Gotta love those procedurally generated names. "The Black Guard" and "The White Castle [Cheeseburger]" were two I encountered on my last session. :P

I hope you still remembered my order when you were at The White Castle, I really want those sliders.

I love it's open-endedness, but I loathe the tree's I just wish there was someway to replace them with 3d models.

I love the night atmosphere during winter. Especially with the music that has some cold winter wind sound effect in it.
My favourite past time, is leaving the tavern at midnight and breaking-in the residences and shops. When I want to spice up the experience, I do it in the city of Daggerfall. :D

One thing I loathe is how the 2D props (such as trees and animals) aren't solid like they are in Arena. :nope:

Are those mushrooms when you walk out of the initial cave?

Still on the trees? Lol.

I think...

I hate the difficulty. It is realistic but man alive is it hard.
