Need help with some simple mesh editing

Alright, here's the scoop.

I have a katana mesh/texture, a one handed and two handed version.

What I want to do, is create an offhand version of the one handed katana. I think I can handle this.

Here's what I'm having trouble with. I'd like both katanas to be crossed and on the player's back. What I've tried to do thus far is edit the two handed katana, I duplicated the katana and sheath and moved them like I want them but only one appears in game. I've read up about ninodes but none of this seems to have any effect either.

Scripting, I can handle. Modeling I really can't. By script, I will do this:

When the one handed katana is equipped, and sheathed, force equip a tail slot item that appears as two sheaths on the player's back; one with a sword in it and one without; put the one handed sword "in" the empty sheath (IE put it on the correct spot on the player model).
When the one handed katana is quipped and unsheathed, force equip a tail slot item that appears as two empty sheaths on the player's back, and force equip the offhand katana.

Mainly, I need help creating the "tail slot items" as well as moving the one handed katana to the player's back when sheathed. I already have the meshes and textures, it's just a matter of "organizing them" this way. Can anyone provide assistance?
