Persistent CTD on start up

Post » Sun Jan 09, 2011 2:02 am

Just got the GOTY edition off Steam. I don't even get past the PLEASE STAND BY slide at the beginning before the CTD. I thought it might have been Windows Live doin it, but I disabled that and the same thing happens. I've been looking around various sources for help, but all I get is the plethora of problems I'll be facing past the main menu. Please help me at least get to that.

Specs:
Windows 7 64-bit
8192MB RAM
AMD Phenom™ II X4 810 Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
ATI Radeon HD 4650

Went and looked at the event viewer. This is my first time using it, so let me know if you need further information and how to get it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as there's no way of getting a refund for this severely broken product.

What graphics card do you have? I see no mention of it.

lol, hehe.

Can you post a dxdiag? It'll help with the problem diagnosis.

But first try the following.

Navigate to My Documents/My Games/Fallout 3 and delete the FALLOUT ini file and then try starting the game. (The game will generate a new ini)

That seems almost counter intuitive, but I'll give it a shot since I already made a backup.

The game maintains a default ini in the main installation folder, and its that one that a new one would be generated from.

I suggest it as sometimes the game will crash on load if the ini contains an error that the game cannot cope with and letting the game create a new one is the easiest way of dealling with it. You would need to redo your game settings though.

Well I'll be goddamned. That worked. I'm sure I'll run into a legion of other glitches, so I'll be frequenting this particular section in the future. Thanks for the help, man.

No problem :) I Like it when the problems are easy to solve :)

Seriously though, deleting the ini and letting the game create a new one is often a surpisingly effective fix for start up crashes like this.

Won't fix all problems, but its a good place to start.
