Dragon Shouts or Thu'um

Post » Sat Jan 15, 2011 1:36 pm

I was watching a vid on youtube and it was about this guy who was talking about what he thought the plot and some other the other things would be in Skyrim, but one of the things that really stood out was he covered the topic of Thu'um or Dragon Shouts; and at the time it was just pure speculation. Then I saw the GI article about dragon shouts and I'm like wow he was actually right. So how do u guys think they are going to implement Thu'um in Skyrim?

One other thing this thread is just for Thu'um; so please keep on topic.

Uh... obviously? As you said, the GI article states that there are Dragon Shouts in the game, which are certainly Thu'um.

Thu'um makes me sad :(

Agreed, and it makes me do this  . Well, hopefully we won't be forced to use them.

I posted this in a different topic but I think it fits here too:
I'm thinking something like the spell system of Eternal Darkness:

They cast lots of spells in this video. There are spells with more than three words in that game, but most of the spells used in this video only have three words. In Eternal Darkness you find words to use and then can make spells out of them, which you then remember:

Early in this video they learn a spell:

I'm imagining Dragon Shouts will be something like that, but more powerful and not just normal spells like in this game, and only limited to three words at once (in Eternal Darkness if I recall all the extra words do is make spells more powerful, so it's actually very similar if I understand the Skyrim information correctly).

Really? Why? I thought it was one of the more interesting aspects of Nordic lore; I was pleasantly surprised to hear they're putting it in the game.

Well, the dragons speak and fire/ice/wind is exhaled. So, I'm guessing you gain a similar power. You speak their language and you breathe out a force.

Out of interest, what's wrong with them?

i cant wait to try them out!

i think this may be the first time we feel like a TRUE legendary hero... i mean, we'll be using the mighty power we've only ever been able to READ about and never actually see in action.

our characters teleporting by shouting... slowing time, possibly breathing fire/ice/powerful wind, etc...

then there was something about summoning a dragon ally, will that be done by using the dragon language or something?

damn... this really should be interesting.

I just got through reading the new GameInformer article on Skyrim (and just for the record, its going to be THE best ES game, period). I was reading about the 'dragon shouts' and immediately thought of Thu'um.

So yes, I think it IS Thu'um. Its just referred to as 'dragon shouts' since the game involves LOTS of dragons.

Can November 11th come ANY SOONER!!!

there are already 2 confirmed dragon shouts (and there will be many) "Blink" will instantly telaport the PC a fair distance in the direction they are facing http://static.zenimax.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/bolt.gif (a great tactical advantage id think) and a "slow time affect".

Will our character perform these actions or when we use a dragon shout it summons a dragon to do them? Will our character actually breathe fire?

Hey guys, just wanted to post a short UESP.net article on the 'http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Thu%27um', outlining the lore of Thu'um. Note the bottom paragraph especially - sounds a lot like the 'Greybeards' at High Hrothgar, no? Or at least, that we may find some of these 'Tongues' among them (presumably the Greybeards can speak). Also, perhaps we will be able to learn some dragon shouts at Markarth Side?

A long practiced spiritual form of Nordic magic, also known as the Tongues, that is based on their worship of the Wind as a personification of Kynareth. Through the use of the Voice the power of a Nord can be formed into a thu'um, or shout - which has a large variety of applications (anything from sharpening blades to a long range weapon). Master Voices (known simply as Tongues) have legendary, and often unbelievable powers, including talking to people of hundreds of miles away or teleportation. The most powerful masters must even be careful whenever they speak, as their voice can cause great destruction and they are commonly gagged.

During the Conquest of Morrowind, the Nordic war chiefs were also Tongues (Derek the Tall, Jorg Helmborg, Hoag Merkiller). They needed no typical siege weapons when attacking a city as they merely used the Voice to break down the city gate and allow their armies to storm in. The future of the Tongues was forever changed by the most powerful Tongue, Jurgen Windcaller, also better known as the Calm. Jurgen converted to a pacifist and refused to use the Voice for any martial purposes. In a confrontation with 17 other tongues he reportedly swallowed the Shouts of the 17 for three days until they lay exhausted, later to become his followers.

Today, all Tongues live secluded lives on the highest peaks of Skyrim in tough conditions and contemplation, and have only spoken to announce the destiny of the great Tiber Septim (who later created an Imperial College of the Voice in Markarth, returning the Voice to the art of warfare).

I would have preferred the romanticized idea that it's something only the nords could do, and even then only a relatively few of them, with an even lesser amount becoming the Greybeards. Sure, the PC will be special and all that, but...the idea of an altmer using a nordish technique well grounded in nord lore just doesn't sit well, even on the toilet. Not to mention it had been recorded that the power of Thu'um was able to level villages, smash reinforced gates, and blasted the Underking, Wulfhart, into ash. The Greybeards need to be gagged, else a huge village dies from one saying "hi"
