How are you roleplaying?

Post » Tue Jan 18, 2011 5:20 pm

So I've played the game for probably 400+ hours (I know at least 300, I had that on my first char) and am trying to re-discover my interest in Fallout 3. I played most of the hours on 360, but now I'm on pc and have gotten some mods. (FWE, etc.). But, I feel like I'm scraping the bottom of the so-called barrel, meaning that I'm running out of fun things to do. I've played "dead is dead", but I'm looking for some new rp ideas. Also, if you have some things to actually do in-game (think rp activites) that would be great. I've made tons of characters who would just wander aimlessly, but they all died and eventually it just got boring.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I play as a character who has been abandoned by his parents from both bereavement and from abandonement so dislikes humanity. Though psychotic it may seem he is not very evil but bad in the terms that all options that are presented before him are chosen in terms on what benefits them.

I'm playing a religious fanatic at the moment. In the beginning she was a alcoholic, killing for beers and wiskey, but in Rivet City she had a divine vision in the church and was send to Point Lookout to help Marcellas mission. Here everything was fine to begin with; a competing church was... ehm... 'converted', and for long a holy light shone upon the swampland.
But one day a local bookcollector contacted me and thereafter things went terribly wrong. Evil forces interfered and soon Marcella became a martyr.
I was broken. After a long time with grief, alcoholism and punishment of the locals I decided to return to the Wasteland to start a crusade against the true infidels of this world: Ghouls, and their Church of the Atom.
I really like this roleplay. Killing ghouls now has a higher purpose. I felt righteous even when I killed Gob.

I always bring casual clothing with me for city-traveling. Most of the time it's Autumn's uniform. Or one of the various mercenary outfits.

So where did you get all those followers from?

After saving the wastes, I have retired to a life of luxury. I wake up every morning, have a drink at Moriarty's (a bottle of whisky, no more ;) ) Always pay a visit to Dashwood, then I go grab Cross to head out and visit the 'strangely abandoned' Paradise Falls to reminisce, head down to the Jefferson Memorial to pay respects to my dead father, and then come back home to play with my dog. (My 2nd char)

Loadup FWE or FOOK for much more in terms of items and gameplay tweaks. Load MMM for stronger mobs.

FWE provides alternate starts. I'm currently using the Scavenger start and am off on another no quest gameset....just wandering around collecting stuff, and generally being a wastelander.

One of the best times I had is when I left the vault I just wandered away. Went south to the map edge, and then west to the corner, then north to the corner, then east. I got killed near Old Only when jumped by two deathclaws, at a mid teen level (I forget exactly now...12 or 14). Died one time (the end) and didn't complete a quest, or enter town. Used what I found and only traded with wasteland merchants.

If you play this way, deciding who to fight gets rather interesting. Maybe your best weapon has 40% life left, and you only have 20 rounds for it. Maybe you only have 3 stimpacks. Maybe the nearest bed you know of is 10 minutes away (no fast travel, of course). Do you think you can beat those raiders over there? Looks like a bunch of them... (With MMM's increased spawns)...and they look well armed...(FWE). You do need ammo and new weapons. Do you risk it?

Setups like this completely change the dynamic of the game. Makes it more of a survival game and less of a quest progression RPG.

My current character is a big guns/energy weapon ne'er-do-good. Level 26, dead is dead, Very Hard. Doesn't really have any issues with doing quests which award good karma, as long as there's caps with the odd homicide upon completion, depending on what he thinks of the person. :stare:

Oh yeah, He's a druggie, and alcoholic and major bigot and is currently saving up the gear to wipe Underworld from the face of the earth (because honestly, the ghouls are freaky enough when sober; image what they'd look like on acid)

I can't say that I really RP all that much. I did have a character go through what I considered an alternative path, one where James survived to the end of the game (I think is svcks that there's not an option to do that anyway). And another guy felt bad about leaving Bryan in Grayditch, so he moved there himself (never disarmed or blew the bomb). And he left the kid food, medicine, toys, clothes, and other stuff. I thought it was a Billy Creel RP, kind of cool. But mostly, I just run around the wasteland bringing hope to the hopeless, help to the helpless, and hard justice to those who deserve it. That's just too much fun for me to do much else.

I confess that I get completely immersed in this aspect of the game.

My current character is female, looks like a hispanic Sarah Lyons and is called "Apples" (= cutesy, 1950's, vault-esque). I shun proper armour and carry a minimum of equipment: 2 guns, less than 10 stimpaks, a few grenades, stealth boy etc...my weight is less than 50 at all times. When you hardly carry any stuff the game is way more challenging and remains interesting for much longer - I'd reccomend it. Anyway, I wear the 101 vault suit and more recently Autumns uniform, although I always carry some sixy sleepwear around for sleeping in (Not that you ever get any six in the game. I'm not sure she's that kind of girl anyway).
My stats are high on perception, charisma, agility and intellegence with rock-bottom strength, stamina and luck. Not much of a fighter although pretty good at sniping. She has to pick her fights very carefully and rely on stealth and discretion.
Although my character is generally a force for good, she's a tormented soul in some ways. She has made errors of judgement in the past. In an adolescent strop she shunned her father for years while going about the wilderness doing other things. Eventually there was reconcilliation. Apples was never fully convinced that the enclave was bad and always hoped for some sort of peaceful outcome. She used to listen to President Eden on the radio a lot and thought of him as some sort of authority figure. It's clear there was an abscence of a man in her life, however independent she may pretend to be.
Then there's the DRUGS. Apples takes loads of narcotics. This is supposedly to increase her chances of survival in extreme situations, but it's getting to the point where she has to take a hit of Jet or NukaCola Quantum before almost every battle. She's often simultaneously addicted to 3 or 4 different things: Buffout, Mentats, Jet and normally returns to Megaton a complete wreck.
But for all of her imperfections she is a thoughtful person. She never carries guns in her hands or even holstered when in civil situations. She takes a huge amount of pride in the way she treats people and the improvements she has helped bring about. She often thinks of the mighty civilisation that was there before the war, how great the ancients must have been, while staring at some destroyed bridge or beautiful ruins.
I'm quite attatched to this character. When she gets killed I'm like "noooooo!!! Apples!!". It's horrific to watch her getting her head shot off or whatever.

This sounds awesome :) What difficulty do you play on? I've tried the whole very-limited-stimpak approach but i always end up with tons anyhow as i can't avoid picking em up if i find any, especially on hard/very hard.

Name: Skar Reaper
Age: 265
Race: Ghoul
Class: Sniper
Background: Skar does not know much about how he was turned into a ghoul, he has suffered from memory loss his whole life. With him slowly turning ferrel its getting worse. There are three things he will alsways remember: 1) How to take off someones head from 1000 yards. 2) He is looked down on because of his race. 3) He must find some sort of cure from turning ferral. Skar has been travelling the wasteland for as long as he can remember and now he has found the Capitol Wasteland, maybe he'll find the cure here. If not then he has heard of a place called New Vegas and that would be his next stop. It can get lonely at times so Skat travels with his trusty companion Dog Meat. :poke:

I'm playing one last character before NV retires FO3: an escaped slave.
FWE has it on the alternative start list, and I like my character so much I believe I'm going to take her to the desert for the next stage of her life.

She woke up in a sheet metal shack like an oven, out in the waste. She didn't have nothing but the dirty clothes she had on and a couple cans of beans and a rusty tire iron. It was all she'd had time to steal, but it would be enough.

The collar was fixed. She couldn't get it off, but she didn't care. She was free.

Anne had been a slave since she was a little kid, so she was used to a hard life. Her muscles were wiry from working, and she knew she was pretty tough. If she played it smart, she thought she had a pretty good chance. Some of the raiders she'd seen come in out of the dust were as dumb as rocks, couldn't even read. And she had her PipBoy. She'd always had it, as long as she could remember, always kept it hid so no one else knew. They'd have took it if they found it, but she took real good care of it, and fixed it so it worked real good. No one else had one that she ever saw.

And if she died, well, it couldn't be worse than what happened to lots of girls when they got older. They died, too. Of diseases, of beatings, of starvation and despair.

And those bastards were going to sell her to a filthy gang from someplace called the Pit. A tasty little toy one of them said, 'til she ain't so tasty any more, and they all laughed real nasty.

So she ran. Fiddled the collar and didn't die. Grabbed the food and the tire iron and crawled under the fence and hid in this shack when it got light. Time to go now before they came looking. Get far away. Find some food, some water, someplace safe.

Maybe come back some day, with guns. And friends, if she can find 'em, trust 'em. Scour that place and all them out of the waste like a dirty pot you use sand to make all shiny.

...

Anne does alright now. She's tough and smart, and learns quick. She's got plenty of caps, so she doesn't go hungry. She doesn't need a lot, and doesn't like to carry stuff that slows her down too much. She's good with bullet guns and dart guns, and she is a devil with her fists. She's seen too many wasted raiders so she doesn't drink or take the drugs she finds. Besides, they're light to carry and worth a lot to sell.

She treats most folks with respect, but slavers and raiders don't get to live. Anne pulls their armor off and leaves 'em in their skivvies in the dirt for the crows. She throws their clothes and their stuff she doesn't want on the ground a little ways away from their bodies. Someone could use their junk, and Anne doesn't see why they should have to pick over a bad smelling corpse for it.

For a while she tried to get the collar off, but even the best fixers couldn't figure it out. Now she kind of likes it. Likes seeing people's faces when they get a look at it, seeing what they do.

Well we all know how the story starts...my father leaves and my escape is a must because the powers that be are after me as a result of his leaving. My character feels that his father has abandoned him, so finding him is not that important right now. He leaves Vault 101 and a life surrounded by technology and ease of living, only to find that technology has decimated the world. So he has decided to shun all things high-tech. He will not use energy weapons or big guns. He will only carry 5 guns at a time. These are 2 pistols and 3 two-handed guns. His exact load out will depend on what his "mission" for that day is. The two pistols are usually the Silenced 10mm Pistol and a Scoped .44 Magnum (sometimes opting for the 10mm SMG instead of the silenced pistol). The two-handed guns are a rifle (either Sniper Rifle or Lincoln's Repeater), Combat Shotgun, and a Chinese Assult Rifle. Any and all of these will be substituted for unique weapons as they are discovered. He will carry up to 10 grenades. Even though he shuns technology, some of these may be pulse grenades because he can use the technology against the rogue robots that plague the countryside. I also limit him to carrying only 4x the capacity of his weapons ammo. This is to contribute to realism. It is way to unrealistic to carry thousands of rounds for each weapon. The only time he carries more than that is when he finds it while out and about, but he always leaves his house in Megaton with the 4x clip max. The only chems he will use are RadAway and Stimpaks. His dress is Recon Armor, a Stormchaser Hat, and the sunglasses he took from Mr. Burke's dead body.

He is a good karma character and always strives to help those that need it. He will not kill needlessly. Only in self defense or for the protection of others. To this end, he will kill on sight any of the murdering scum that call themselves Raiders, or any creature that would do the same to any human. He especially hates all robots and will go out of his way to destroy them. (He does tolerate Wadsworth because he was a gift). His tactical style is to sneak and snipe. He spends his days performing tasks for people that ask for his help and scavenging the wasteland to find items of value that he can sell. He makes the bulk of his caps selling energy weapons, big guns, and their corresponding ammo.

To date, he has helped Moira Brown write The Wasteland Survival Guide, helped create an alliance between the people of Arefu and "The Family", found the Declaration of Independence for Abraham Washington, cleared the village of Grayditch of it's fire ant infestation and found a home for Bryan Wilks. He also cleared the Lincoln Memorial of Slavers for the Temple of the Union. There is still SO much to do! I do play "Dead-is-dead", so we'll see how long he can last. (Level 13 so far).

At some point, he will probably look for his dad, just to find out why he left. But for the most part, he just want's to help his fellow man survive this mess that mankind wrought upon himself.
