Repair at 100

Post » Wed Jan 19, 2011 5:18 am

I got my repair skill to 100 finally, which I was really looking forward to. Now I'm noticing something that I find odd..

When I try to repair any item with no or little health, with an item that's been fully repaired, I get the "can't repair past 100%" message. Huh? The item I'm trying to repair is nowhere near 100%.

So for now I'm thinking what I'll have to do is keep a container with lots and LOTs of rifles and such? Oh man I hope my char doesn't get OC.

Can one of you veterans please explain this to me?

Thanks!

Well, repairing something with a weapon that has a higher condition gives the same outcome as the other way around. Try firing a couple of rounds with the 100% one, then repair.

Hmm, I hadn't really thought of it like that, for some reason. I guess it doesn't make much sense to do what I was trying to do.

Thanks!

It doesn't matter which weapon is at 100% health, if either of them are then you won't be able to repair anything. Or if one is at 60% and the other at 45%, then you won't be able to repair either of those either. Having your Repair at 100 doesn't mean you can repair anything at any time, you're still limited by the overall mechanics of it.

Hmmm? How come?

I would think I could repair/improve the condition of the 60% item using the parts of the 45% item?

Please explain and thank you.

Well it's just basic math now isn't it? 60% + 45% = 105%. And you can't repair any weapon past 100%. The health of each weapon combined can't exceed the maximum you're capable of repairing. You're not just removing a few select parts from one and sticking it into the other, the entire item gets consumed.

In this case i thought the 'extra' 5% was just lost....no? I'm pretty sure if you repair a 60% with a 60% you'll get 100% and lose 20% but I may be wrong.

There may be a certain amount of loss but it's not a complete one the way you're suggesting. I'm not really sure what the mechanics are. I was just using that as an example more than anything. But you can't simply use an inferior weapon to repair any other weapon. If the two combined come out to more than 100%, then you can't repair either one.

PS: Aaah so your Repair skill also factors in. This is from the Portal:

The final condition of the item being repaired is equal to (condition of the less damaged item) + 5%*(condition of the more damaged item) + 5% + 0.15%*(player's repair skill level). For example, combining a 20% minigun and a 10% minigun by a player with 10 points in repair skill will result in 20%+0.5%+5%+1.5%=27% final condition. The same repair performed by a player with 50 points in repair, will give a 33% condition minigun. Other than determining the item type, it doesn't matter if you repair item A with item B or the other way around. (The formula also works when the two items have different item HP even if one of them is unique — the item conditions are taken into account, not HP.)

So even if you have one gun at 60% and another 40%, you can't repair them since your Repair skill will put the total over 100%.

Hell bells... I did not know that. I thought the item Used to repair wold be used up regardless if it plus the item To Be repaired exceeded 100%

With an open mind a fella can learn something every dang day!

Thanks buddy!

Actually, this is not true. Try this in game, take a 90% repairs item and another 90% repaired item, and use them to repair each other, you will get 1 100% item. You can repair 2 items even if the condition goes over 100% when you repair them together you just lose the extra %s. You just can't repair a broken weapon with a perfect weapon iirc.

Yes there is some loss when combining the two items. Just look at the example. A 20% Minigun and a a 10% Minigun with a repair skill of 10 only creates a 27% repaired weapon. 3% total was lost even when factoring in the Repair skill. Unfortunately my math svcks and I can't figure out how much the amount of loss would be. At some point though, you'll come across a couple of weapons that you just can't repair, even with your skill at 100%. I come across that scenario all the time when I play. You need to degrade one or the other before you can use them to repair each other.

What I see while playing (having a 100 repair skill) is you Cannot repair a lower condition weapon item with a 100% perfect condition weapon and it makes perfect sense that you can't. I mean what is the point? You already have a perfect weapon so why destroy it to get another, exactly the same, perfect weapon.

I keep my repair skill at 99 to avoid this issue, this way I can repair anything and have alot of spare parts...and remove encumbrance from my inventory. If you want an item in perfect condition just take a Mentat.
