Older Fallout Titles

Yeah they're definitely worth having and playing, graphics aren't really that bad for what the games are, FO Tactics graphics are good, but overall so far they do take a bit of effort, I think the gameplay is nothing like FO3 or NV but give them a blast, good to play the History :) of Fallout.

Fallout Official v1.1 Patch and Fallout1 High Resolution Patch 2.2b (especially for Vista/Win7 users) are the most important patches.

OR

the unofficial patches: patch 1.2 by TeamX (must be installed first) then patch 1.34 by TeamX + Fallout1 High Resolution Patch 2.2b.
I never tested these TeamX patches myself though so I don't know what will happen exactly. All I know is it fixes tons of bugs and TeamX is a reliable modding group.

Here are all the patches: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=category&cat_id=12

Choose a humongous installation. A clean manual installation is recommendable.

Installation trouble check here: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5061

Patches are relatively easy to install, usually unrar and/or paste them in the game folder. However read the read me files included with the patches.

*Edit* I think the no-cd problem is also solved by the official or TeamX patch if you performed a full installation that is.

To get rid of the rainbow effect you have to go to Options (from the main menu, not during gameplay) and click the SCRN button. Then switch the color depth over to 16 bit and restart the game.

You're not running it in compatibility mode are you? In my experience Windows compatibility mode tends to cause more problems than it solves.

no im not. I just have the screen resolution screen up and it takes care of the rainbow thing for some reaosn, but it could also be my comp. it tends to freeze for really weird reasons, but since im getting a new motherboard and video card hopefully it'll help.

That doesn't sound healthy, it could be your pc then. Uninstall unwanted/unused programs, clean out the registry, check harddrive for errors, check -> install hardware drivers if they are malfunctioning and a little defragmentation can perform miracles once in a while. Sometimes these comp freezes can be caused by viruses or spyware so a virus/malware scan is probably a good idea as well. You don't need to be a computer expert to perform these procedures because there are a lot of helpful programs on the internet to make these tedious tasks a bit easier for you. Although you do need a little patience, a couple of hours or 1/2 day maybe.

Fallout 1 doesn't require a lot of hardware recourses and should perform on almost any machine nowadays. You can also wait for your new motherboard/video card of course, but I don't think that's the main cause of this freezing problem unless your hardware is really broken but then you can expect some major malfunctions which is not the case I believe.

Well my computer did this awhile ago. I then got Windows 7 hoping that would help, but it kept doing thta. Called microsoft and everything and we would fix it for a little while then it would do it again. I can still hear music, but nothing will work. My computer is not even a year old, but I don't know what I could do to fix it. I played yesterday for an hour without anything and I just made sure I didn't click all over the place (I tend to do that). If you have any websites that would help that'd be great. I have tried everything.

So, you upgraded to Windows 7? I dunno for sure, but maybe this is the core issue. I heard when people upgraded their machines from XP to Vista there were a lot of hardware related error reports and since Windows 7 has a lot in common with Vista... but like I said I dunno, you should check out the microsoft forums, tweakers.net, etc.

Anyways here are a few free maintenance prog's I use:

http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I use register mechanic for cleaning my register but it isn't free however.

So maybe this will help: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Search/registry_cleaner.html

Dunno if it's free but I used this in the past: http://www.errorexpert.com/download.html

And here is a great video for basic computer maintenance + utilities:

*Edit* Gamebooster is a nice utility for all your games btw, turns off unnecessary services/programs while playing:
