Looking for an "outside" house mod

Post » Thu Jan 27, 2011 7:52 am

I've been messing around with the construction set and made a simple sort of house mod for myself. Now I want to do something different and am looking to see if what I want to do already exists in some other mod.

I want to make or find a house mod where the "interior" of the house is not actually in an interior instance as are the insides of most buildings in the game. I want it to be a part of the outside world instance so I could for example build a huge tower with a room on the top, with windows that actually look out over the real terrain below, because the room of the house loads up with the rest of the "outside world."

I just wanted to know if anyone knew of an existing mod that was like that, or if not that, if anyone knows any mods someone has made for transparent windows that could be used in one.

I've seen quite a few. I think some of Korana's houses are like this.

The one I remember is Suran Hillside Manor by Erstam, which is quite nice.

Edit: It looks like he mentions resources for glass panes and doors by dongle.

Thank you very much, I will check these out.

Edit: Yeah from looking at the Erstam guy's website, he says: "What's special about this house is that the rooms are actually built in the exterior world. That is, you can look out of the (many) windows and see the real landscape outside." This is exactly what I was looking for so this should help me a lot!

Many house mods use see-through windows but are not a part of the game world. Korana's Ascadian Rose Cottage, for instance, is located in a standard interior cell with a dummy landscape outside the windows that mimics the landscape around Pelagiad.

The first genuine exterior-cell house mod was CrDuncan's http://morrowind4kids.com/pseronwyrd/CleanRealHouseCrDuncan.zip and I think it is still the nicest. The Real House is situated on the coastline north of Seyda Neen. Standing in the upstairs bedroom, watching the sun set off the Bitter Coast horizon is one of the most peaceful memories I have of Morrowind. And if you add abot's Where are all birds going mod it makes the experience even better. It's wonderfully relaxing to watch seabirds through the picture window.

The thing to remember about such housed is the lamentable fact that while MCP can stop rain and snow from passing through your roof, there is apparently no way to stop blizzards, ash storms, and blight storms from blowing through your house as if the walls didn't exist.

Assigning the cells to a new region with weather set to 100% clear should work.

Try Crankgorilla's West Gash Library mod . Its an interior , no no : its an exterior with weather ..... um ? See for yourself . It pretty much does what you are after .

Sure, but one of the neat things about having MCP and a house that is an exterior structure with no interior cells, is the ability to stand at a window and watch the snow or rain come down. Creating a new region wherever the house is and modifying the weather accordingly is of course one alternative, but I thought the OP was looking for an existing mod rather one to build on his own or alter.

I was just pointing out that you want to be careful what region that house is in. I had the unpleasant experience of having great house on Solsteim... until the blizzards started to hit, eh? :) I changed it of course, but then what is Solsteim without blizzards?

My memory is shaky--been a long time--but Rain's Hand Hall is pretty amazing, and there's one room (Solace, the bedroom) that is sorta outside. Or something. http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2064

Actually, Solace is an interior cell, too. And Atreus used that interior cell to brilliant effect, in my opinion. When you look out through the two open walls you see only fog and water - an awesome sight. That vast openness stretching outward towards infinity gives the room it's unsettling, mystical (yet peaceful) atmosphere.

Thanks! I knew it was awesome, but didn't understand quite WHAT it was.

Thank you guys very much for these examples, but like others have said, a lot of these are only "simulated exterior" houses. I think the only ones I have heard about so far that really are exterior are Suran Hillside Manor and the Clean Real House. Please correct me if I am wrong; I want to find as many examples of exterior-cell houses as I can.

I don't know of any other exterior houses but Balmora Expansion uses the greenhouse meshes used by Erstam (and I guess CrDuncan) to create a shop. IIRC, it's for Dave's Furniture Store and may well be a duplicate of the shop in that plugin.
