MGE 3.8.2 Lag

Post » Fri Jan 28, 2011 7:01 am

Hi, I posted in the main topic for this and just got ignored...
But i always get an insane amount of lag when i use distant land on MGE.

I can run it without distant lands on just fine but as soon as i turn it on i lag, anyone have a solution?

You can try limiting what is rendered in Distant Land, but you're best off just getting a better computer and a better video card.
There isn't really any secret trick, just get better hardware.

I'm not sure what you mean by "running it." MGE has a number of different features (internal MWSE, macro editor, AA/AF settings, resolution settings, shaders, distant land, etc). But most of these (except distant land and shaders) won't have much if any noticeable performance hit on a modern machine. So if you're running MGE but not using distant land or shaders, you're not taxing your machine. When you use distant land and it "lags," that's because it is taxing your system.

You can try lowering distant land settings during generation, lowering statics especially helps performance, draw fewer cells on the distant land tab, alter reflection settings... but depending upon your hardware it might just not be in the cards. Especially if you have high expectations (like 60fps with distant land and shaders, it probably isn't going to happen). Why don't you post your system information and we can see if your machine should be capable of better?

Finally, even if your post is overlooked the first time, it is better to try again in the MGE thread rather than creating a new topic. Keeps it all together and helps everyone out, ultimately.

Processor: AMD Sempron™ 140 Processor, ~2.7GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

Let me know what you think this would be capable of or if you need any more info. :foodndrink:

The CPU is weak but it isn't your biggest issue here. The GeForce 6150 integrated GPU is just simply too weak to run distant land at any appreciable settings. Perhaps if you lower the draw distance and quality sufficiently you can get something out of it, but I would doubt you'll be happy with performance either way.

A dedicated GPU would certainly expand your capabilities quite a bit if you have the money to spare, but I am not sure how much that CPU is going to keep your performance bottlenecked even then.

What features did you enable within MGE? Even with a GeForce 9800 I got into serious performance issues. So I started with "Best quality" and then ran a few tests. Grass is probably one of the most performance demanding features. Setting its density to 50% gave me a huge boost, limiting rendered cell distance is also a good starting point. Further, you could try to decrease AA or Anisotropic Filtering. Do you have any shaders activated?

It's very difficult to give a tip what settings should work for you. Just check "FPS counter" box and find out for yourself, what gives you the desired balance of performance / quality. Probably your graphics card is simply too slow.

I can personally verify that the 6100ish cards cannot run MGE distant land at all. Even if you flip it on with 1 cell, it'll lag you to death. I upgraded my old 6100 card years ago for this same reason. You can probably buy something over at newegg for under 70 bucks that will blow it out of the water.

Congratulations. :intergalactic:

GPU naming is very trickery. I found this site pretty useful.

http://www.emsai.net/reviews/gpu/

Also, if you're using an AGP card, it will be difficult to find something compatible. You may have to switch your mainboard.

Ask in community thread to get better advices.

In addition to what Vtastek said, you can use the program CPU-Z to identify your motherboard. This should be able to tell us (or responders in Community Discussion should you choose to repost there) whether you have AGP or PCI-E expansion slots available.

Also, if possible you should provide the brand name and model of your power supply, alongside your budget for a GPU.

Unfortunately my desktop PC is currently unavailable (all of my hardware and data is fine, but I've put it away for the time being), so the character I've started on my laptop is using entirely vanilla Morrowind. When my desktop eventually goes back up I would certainly like to record more, but I'm not sure when that will be.

If it turns out that you do have a PCI Express slot available and a sufficient power supply, the GTS 450 would be very solid if you can afford it at around $130. I like EVGA but there are other vendors as well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130572&cm_re=gts_450-_-14-130-572-_-Product. If the price on that is too high, or you prefer ATI, perhaps someone else can suggest a card in a different bracket.
