I use my place in Megaton pretty much the same as you do. But I also use it to keep Dogmeat. I don't like him wandering around the wastes or camped out at Vault 101 all the time. And for my character to have a place to kick back.
I have an incredible character flaw (anol I guess) when it comes to shutting down the game for the day. I hate, repeat, HATE to leave my character, Luke, just standing around somewhere, all by himself, alone and afraid as night falls. It has got so bad that one time I woke up about 3:00 am, started my computer and started the game just so I could send Luke back to his little house... no kiddin... nuts huh?
Oh well...
