Study and you shall learn

Post » Fri Feb 04, 2011 6:12 am

so it suddenly hit me - you can get skill upgrades in morrowind from reading books but you dont LEARN anything.

Wizards become powerful by learning new spells. In morrowind you can do this easliy but wizards normally study countless books and experiment ect... before they learn a spell.

So to make things a little more like this notion of learning spells from books I have picked some of morrowinds books and have made it so that when you read them you will learn a spell.

Now, are there any other books that you think should be included in the list? or do you think the spells are overpowerig? any tips/advice?

Heres the current list as it stands:

Breathing water - learn a water breathing spell
Incident at Necrom - learn a Paralyse spell
The cake and the Diamond - Learn an invisibility sepll
The art of War magic - Learn a Fireball spell
Mysticism - Learn a dispell spell.
Corpse preperation* - Learn Summon Bonewalker spell

*must read all 3 volumes in order before you recieve spell.

Also if anyone wants to write some short stories that involve magc somehow so i can apply a spell to them that would be great :D

so what do you think?

I think it's a good idea.
I liked the way TR does it with some of their books, including the fact that not just anyone can learn the spell, but only characters with high enough Skills in that area of magic.

I am not going to restrict the spells, so anyone can learn them :)

though I have this idea for corpse preperation volumes 1-3:

Instead of learning a conjuration spell I thought perhaps that reading all 3 books will yield one spell (summon bonewalker)

so reading them in order:

volume 1: Messagebox "After reading the text you realise you have started down a dark path. You realise that now is the time to turn away before it gets worse or should you continue into the darkness"

Volume 2: Messagbox "Reading this book has given you a greater understanding of necromancy and theres no turning back. You cannot unlearn what you have learnt and so forever keep the dark secrets hidden within you."

Volume 3: Messagebox: "Your journey is complete. You have mastered a small section of the dark arts. The rest if for you too learn. [Learnt new spell: Summon Bonewalker]

So you read the volumes in order and then are rewarded at the end, what do you think?

I feel this is a much better way to grant the player a summon bonewalker spell instead of just attaching a spell to all three volumes.

This reminds me of Stuporstar's http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8438

The Necromancer's grimoire is a little bit special. It comes with a benefit and a curse. This grimoire will summon a powerful skeleton companion, which will follow you for an hour before disappearing. It has proper follow scripting so it will be hard to lose.
- The skeleton companion is based on the skeleton war-wizard, so its fairly powerful. It disappears on death just like a summon though, so it cannot be looted.
- While under the influence of the Necromancer's grimoire, your personality will drop significantly. This effect will be removed once the grimoire wears off and you no longer have a skeleton following you around and scaring the locals.

Though your idea takes it a bit further :)

What about learning a spell for a series of books, and as you read more of them, the spell becomes more powerful?

Yeah its similar and should work well with Stuporstars mod.

Thats a good idea, do you have a series of books in mind? I am not planing on wrting any new books for this mod, but if someone else wants to then I could work something like that into the mod.

all in good time :D

Will you make the mod compatible with BookRotate? And are TR's books? I wouldn't know what to do without BookRotate.

Some questions for you Midge :
Would you make them generally speaking , average strength spells or , as I would assume that there would be a limit on the number of these books available , a fairly high powered spell ?
It would be grand to have a series of learnable Summon spells for example say from monster encyclopedia series . Or a series of specific spells that would be tailored for dealing with a specific foe ( the foe in question would be described in the book that teaches the spell . )
Its a great idea and one I'll be keen to try out .

I've got a few things on my plate, at the moment... but if you're at all interested in the offer I'm about to make... feel free to contact me (either PM or on a thread or right here... whatever works best for you) and let me know.

This -is-... almost exactly... like Spell Tomes. But for Morrowind. And better.

Unfortunately... Morrowind has a selection of books which are, to be blunt, -abysmal- for this idea.

Sure, there are a lot of them... but most would be a stretch to make them 'teach' you magic. There are only a few series' like Corpse Prep which work for your Bonewalker spell... and really... to be blunt... your mod DESERVES better than what Vanilla Morrowind has to offer.

So... what if I were to take it upon myself... to make you a whole slew of books... (with words and everything even, if you like)... which you could apply your magic to?

I'd be more than happy to do it, in my free time, between working on my Census and Excise mod... and helping out with Pelagiad Expanded.

It's definitely do-able. And a great idea. I loved the spell-tomes.

Plus... with your idea of 'series' put into play... I can imagine it now. A whole series of books... which as you read them... could progressively teach you a 'chain' of magic along that same line.

-'The Arcanister's Wall: Building a Better Barrier Vol. I'-

Reading it gives you First Barrier.

Reading volume two? Second Barrier.

So on. So forth.

It'd help you out, right? I mean... you should still apply the 'spell learning' bit to whatever other books you wanted... but you wouldn't -object- to the idea of being supplied with a mountain of books?
