Greatest Villain of All Time Competition at Gamespot.com

Post » Fri Feb 04, 2011 4:08 am

Gamespot.com is hosting a 64 person "Greatest Villain of All Time" competition. The bracket starts with 64 villains that Gamespot chose and people vote on which ones go to the next level. The reason this is interesting is that The Master from Fallout 1 is one of the villains chosen. So if you want to see The Master through as the greatest villain of all time http://www.gamespot.com/greatest-video-game-villain/vote/battle-hub/index.html?battle_id=24 to vote.

Indeed. They shouldn't have put her against a recent villain like GlaDOS, that was a guaranteed (and unfair) loss for Shodan, considering how many people played Portal and with the upcoming Portal 2.

I dunno if the master would be the absolute villain because there was always a possibility to make him regret what he was doing through speech. An absolute end boss would stick by his/her evil ways imo.

The pairs seem a bit unfair at times. I know I vote for donkey kong instead of the joker though.

Sephiroth is a bag of pretty boy fail. Ram would beat his scrawny ass.

What really disappoints me is that all the comments are about physical "General Raam can take Dr. Breen in a fight!!!" Being a villain isn't about who can kill who, but just how much damage (psychological, mental, emotional, social, etc.) you can inflict.

That being said, I expect General Raam to win this popularity poll. >.>

Did I just see the [censored] pacman ghosts on "greatest villain"?
Only reason people vote for some are because they know theyre iconic characters, but who is truly the greatest villain?
Why is he/she the greatest villain?
What's his/her goal?
How does he/she plan to go through with it?

*sigh*
You can't let the people decide you have to have a bunch of old time gamers locked away in a room, let them play each game and let them anolyze all villains and let this pro-team come to a conclusion.
You let the people vote for it and well... You have things like BOWSER WINNING!?!?!
All he does is kidnap the princess.
Yeah, great villain.

That thing pissed me off on so many levels.
I gotta have a smoke.
*grabs a cancer-stick*

By the way, why is Lavos on the list?
It's an planet eater, it does not have any evil goal, all it does is try to survive by devouring planets.
Sure it can seem evil for it to eat the PC's planet but hey it doesn't know any better.
It's like expecting a new puppy not to pee on the carpet.

Wouldn't really call the Master a villain either.
Sure his plan wasn't the most moral but if he had succeeded then maybe meta-man kind wouldn't been able to fix the world again.

TL:DR /Rage /Rage /Rant /Confusion

Id call them villains. I just wouldnt call them evil.
From the perspective of the games protagonist they are villains. I would go as far as to say that they are good/great villains because they are not clear cut evil. Their goals are understandable, and its possible to even sympathise with their perspectives, the fact that Lavos knows no better makes him a great villain. The fact that had the Masters plan succeeded it probably would have been the best course for humanity makes him great villain.
~ You dont have to be backlit to be the villain, and i prefer those who are not. They're not a boring one dimensional characters whose only goals are to kidnap the princess.

I guess I've misunderstood the word villain then.

Still, a villain should have a great story behind him, some of those on the list are surely going to the finalé just for being iconic characters.

Id agree that the connotations of the word villain scream "HE'S BEHIND YOU!" and other pantomime stereotypes. Complete with moustache twirling and the rubbing of hands together. Here's a good quote on the subject "In the real world there are no villains. No one actually sets out to do evil. Fiction mirrors life. Or, more accurately, fiction serves as a lens to focus what we know of life and bring its realities into sharper, clearer understanding for us. There are no villains cackling and rubbing their hands in glee as they contemplate their evil deeds. There are only people with problems, struggling to solve them." - (Ben Bova, lifted from the wikipedia article on "Villain")

The concept of a villain is something which varies dependent on subject matter, in a pantomime or cartoon Captain Hook and dike Dastardly are villains. In a more mature setting, the likes of The Master are most definitely villains.

Still, a villain should have a great story behind him, some of those on the list are surely going to the finalé just for being iconic characters.

Agreed 100%. Though i didnt ever expect much from a gamespot poll :P
