Witches

Hello.
I've been wondering something for a while now. I searched The Imperial Library but didn't find anything that conclusive.
What I've been wondering is, is there any real difference between your average mage and a witch?
Searching through The Imperial Library I found some references to witches doing deals with daedra, and when a witch is mentioned it doesn't exactly accompany a nice warm comment.
I know there's one witch in Oblivion, the Glenmoril witch, and in Morrowind three witches of the same coven are found. I haven't played any other elder scrolls game beyond those two, so my knowledge runs short.
Is it their practices that sets them apart? Do they know darker magicks? Rituals?
If you can help answer any of these questions I'd greatly appreciate it.

I can't say for certain but I'm pretty sure Witches dabble in darker arts that would border on necromancy and the obscene to to the archaic, such as the evil Witch that forged the Umbra sword with soul harvesting powers. The witches you hear of are never member's of the Mages Guild so it may also be because of prejudice from both sides resulting in an estrangement of sorts.

I'm sorry I can't really be of more help :)

EDIT: This is the only semi-useful link on UESP.net I found: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dictionary_W It provides some insight onto what the Witch hunter hunts and so a little of what exactly a witch does.

Is it their practices that sets them apart?

Yes. Everything else, no. Darker magics is just a moral judgment and practically anybody can do rituals or make deals with Daedra. The difference seems to be in their attitude to the whole matter, not with what they do with magic.

Turala turned to Cassyr, who shook his head. "Witches. Am I correct in assuming that this is Old Barbyn's Farm, the home of the Skeffington Coven?"

"You are, pet," the old woman giggled girlishly, pleased to be so infamous. "I am Mynista Skeffington."

"What did you do to those orcs?" asked Turala. "Back there in the thicket?"

"Spirit fist right side the head," Mynista said, continuing the climb up the hill. Ahead of them was the farmhouse grounds, a well, a chicken coop, a pond, women of all ages doing chores, the laughter of children at play. The old woman turned and saw that Turala did not understand. "Don't you have witches where you come from, child?"

"None that I know of," she said.

"There are all sorts of wielders of magic in Tamriel," she explained. "The Psijics study magic like its their painful duty. The battlemages in the army on the other end of the scale hurl spells like arrows. We witches commune and conjure and celebrate. To fell those orcs, I merely whispered to the spirits of the air, Amaro, Pina, Tallatha, the fingers of Kynareth, and the breath of the world, with whom I have an intimate acquaintance, to smack those bastards dead. You see, conjuration is not about might, or solving riddles, or agonizing over musty old scrolls. It's about fostering relations. Being friendly, you might say."

Thanks both of you. And thanks for that quote, Proweler, gave me a better understanding of a witches real attitude. :)
