Equipment Damage

Post » Thu Feb 10, 2011 9:21 am

(Sorry if this has come up before)

In Oblivion and Morrowind, your equipment would get damaged through use until that condition meter expired and your item disappeared to your inventory.

What I would prefer is that your equipment would begin to show visible damage (chips, splinters, dents, cracks) and then finally break in two, but could still be used only in a more limited capacity.

Like if you were using a sword and were striking it against hard objects like shields and armor it would begin to chip as it was near breaking, then finally break in half, leaving you with a stumpy sword that has a much shorter reach, but could still be used.

Also it would be great to be a high level character and slice a low level character's shield in two.

Come now, it was annoying enough losing magic arrows, now you want to lose everything else too? Oblivions was fine enough.

Yes, that way if I'm deep into a dungeon or cave fighting trolls and my sword breaks I can still have something other than my fists to defend myself with.

I think realistic is cool. Nothing wrong with actually having to use strategy while playing. Like in real life, if your blade becomes dull and worn then it will do less damage. When meeting a sharper blade it could possibly be cut in half. That would be awesome!

Question is whether or not wooden handled weapons would break when hit by a sharp object. Like if you try and block a sword chop from a giant / ogre using a spear, will the spear break in half?

Either way, if it isn't already implemented in Skyrim (which I doubt is it) then its to late to be added. I don't think that Bethesda will have thought to implement it sadly.

Good idea though.

If this were implemented then having half of the weapon would probably be enough to repair it.

Keep it just cosmetic. Did anyone actually find the jamming guns in Far Cry 2 fun? Does hunting for broken pieces of your swords/armor sound like a good time?

No.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that swords will not shatter or break in half. I think thats kind of a legend.
The sword will become blunt or get out of shape, but to break it..I don't think a human is able to do that, especially when you have a weapon thats bendable too (e.g. a Katana).

If you had an option where the armor and weapons still broke but they showed signs of chipping and wear then I would've voted for that. Instead I voted for keeping it where it becomes broken.

Your right, a human couldn't do it, but Sauron can!

I wouldn't mind seeing this implemented in the crafting skill. while fighting your sword/axe or w/e can break but can be fixed depending on how high your crafting skill is OR can be repaired at a smithy. I'd like to actually see the sword break in half or something that'd be cool. but anyways I wouldn't like to see everything breakable and losing items is a bit stupid if it breaks it's fixable!

I'd like to see #1...but could we make it so the broken parts would fall into our equipment instead, so we wouldn't have to look all over to find it? If the broken part apeared in my inventory, I'd be fine. Though it would be a pain for developers. Would they need to make unque finishers for broken swords and other weapons as well?

Would a broken sword be repairable again, or would the damage be permanent?
If it could be repaired back to normal state after being broken, I think I'd like that system.. if the damage was permanent I think it would be rather annoying instead.

I think the Oblivion system is good. I don't want my broken gear to ever become irreparable, and as cool as cosmetic change would be, weapons would either be modified by code or scripts so that any modded weapon may look weird when broken or have to have much more complex or simply more meshes and textures, really ruining modders' ability to make weapons as good as the game nearly as often as is seen for Oblivion.

Enchanted items should be harder to permanently break, same for unique weapons. Stuff like arrows should break if you're really unskilled and go for a powerful shot. Bows should break almost always if you use them to block. Swords should be next, then axes and then blunt weapons. Shields should be hard to break unless they are wooden and the thing hitting them is a large two handed weapon. Armor should be able to break, fall apart, get scratched, dented, etc.

It would be the first game ever to have visible damages on weapons armor.

We've had vehicular damage since N64, why not armor?

The split bar.
Temporal: Damage caused by using it. Normal wear and tear blunting the weapon which can be repaired after battle if you have the skill.
Permanent: Typically damage caused by magic (disintegration), and every time you repair you lower the maximum potential. You have to visit the armorer to fix this.
When condition reaches zero, the piece is permanently broken. You cannot repair it without reforging it in town. It cannot be equipped.

Condition can be shown as simple as a texture. For armor (especially metal), big bump maps you can fix into smaller bump maps, but only an armorer can make it back to mint condition. No need to run around looking for broken off pieces. Besides it conflicts with how weapon stats work, maybe even animation. I.e. how does a thrust work (armor piercing) if you've broken off the tip?
