[REQ] Open Cities Version of Kvatch Rebuilt

Post » Fri Feb 11, 2011 11:09 pm

Now that I am nearing completion of my load order, I'm finally getting close to being able to actually play the game...
I use Open Cities after deciding it fit my game better than Better Cities. I'm surprised to find that there is no Open Cities
version of Kvatch Rebuilt, yet there is for Bartholm? Has anyone attempted to bring Kvatch to the world cell yet?

Thanks all!

I don't believe anyone's done this yet, but it's certainly possible to do.

Great to hear that it is possible. I figured the mod was popular enough that it would of been done by now. Perhaps it would require author permissions?

EDIT - YAY!! I just noticed they changed the nerfed star system back to the old hardcoe system!
Wonder how many people complained? I know I got pretty irate. They locked my topic over it. LOL!

It would certainly require permission from the creators of KR, if the creators themselves aren't interested in creating OC KR.

I have never seen any of the authors here on the forums...

The readme might provide contact details. I've never downloaded KR so I wouldn't know.

NIce! Just found this site based in the readme...

http://kvatch.net/forum/

Looks like there have been some additional improvements being worked on in addition to Kvatch Rebuilt. I don't think KR is being updated frequently on TESNEXUS.

EDIT - Activity from the authors there looks limited if at all.

Currently kvatch rebuilt is mainly managed by Zaldir.
He is available on these forums.

You can also try Kvatch.net

Thanks for the tip. I'll PM Zaldir to find out if they would be willing to allow permissions for an OC version.

This has been discussed before and there are some issues with the main quest where you 1st go to Kvatch to find Martin. Namely that it requires all the monsters in the courtyard to be out of the way whilst you close the gate out side it.

After this is complete I suppose it could be made to be open. Open cities changes Bruma to be closed momentarily after a later main quest part in order to create your statue

More of a matter of will that a way IMHO

I use the MainQuestDelayer mod that pairs with Kvatch Rebuilt. So, the majority of my game will have a completed Kvatch. Open Kvatch should be able to work with this mod, but would just need to be disabled once the main quest begins, and then re-enabled once the main quest is done.

But with vanilla Kvatch, yes as you said it would be best to only enable the open cities Kvatch once the main quest has been completed, but that is when you are supposed to activate Kvatch Rebuilt anyways.

Open Kvatch sounds like it shouldn't be as difficult to pull off as others may think IMO.

Actually it doesn't. OC Bruma remains open 100% of the time once you've installed it. The statue is created in both the closed and open worldspaces without having to close the city in any way.

The technical details behind how KR work make this much more difficult than you may realize. The rebuilding of the city is handled in stages which are isolated in their own separate worldspaces. Since an Open Kvatch would by necessity have to all be in a single worldspace, it would mean having to literally place 5 copies of everything into the same location and setup the proper quest stage toggling to get it all to switch over properly. This sort of thing almost never goes 100% smoothly, and the CS would be hopelessly crowded with stuff since you can't turn it all off there.

Vanilla Kvatch wouldn't be terribly difficult to make work though, but personally I'd rather just avoid messing with it because of the compatibility issues it creates with the main quest. Bruma was mild by comparison.

Oh, and FYI, an open version of Bartholm was no different from opening any other vanilla city. It doesn't have staged worldspace changes to contend with.

Yeah, I forgot about the stages... However, I really am only interested in a completed OC Kvatch (based from the Rebuilt version) that could be activated once all stages of construction have been completed, or for instance... When used with the Main Quest Delayer. I mean, I can live without a OC Kvatch, but it would be pretty awesome at the same time. I think more than anything, I was just surprised it hadn't been done since all other cities have.

Mmmm, something funny must have happened to me when I did it. Returning to Bruma after the great gate I found the doors closed. Activating it took me to the Bruma closed world space a-la vanilla, and there was my statue, only with no head! I thought this was part of the OC handling of the statue production (i assummed the lack of head was due to the semi-custom race I was using (Breton Eyecandy from ECC)). Anyhow, I've moved onto a new game/setup now so not Bov-ved

Was hoping you'd chip it, being the expert on this. I knew there was a good reason wht KR couldn't be open. A patch to make the final version open would be ace tho :disco:

Yeah, the main reason I didn't was because it's so closely tied to the MQ. When I first took over OC, that was beyond my knowledge. Now with various Kvatch mods out there messing with it doesn't seem practical.

That can happen if you reload the game without first exiting to desktop. The game doesn't always properly disable things that should be, which unfortunately includes the city gates OC disables.

That's probably more feasible. At least it would only be one worldspace, and since it would be specifically tied to KR it wouldn't present issues with any of the other Kvatch mods. I won't promise anything, but I'm not ruling it out either.

In theory it is possible to make an OC version of KR... without detracting from KR or making any in-game noticable changes.

Firstly you would need to take each of the siege worldspaces and copy them to new world spaces that are not dependent on the 'Tamriel' worldspace. This would allow editing of the ground textures within the city walls without taking the burnt ground effects away from the siege worldspaces.

Secondly you would need to copy all of the data and references from the final 5th stage of KR and plop those onto the Tamriel worldspace within the city walls. A lot of editing of scripts would need to be done for this.

Thirdly there are a lot of 'main gates' at the entrance to Kvatch controlling which world space you enter, more editing of scripts would need to be done to ensure that the 5th stage gate is disabled at the right moment thus allowing Kvatch to be open.

I'm not sure if I've made any sense lol. Anyway a lot of work would need to be done but it is certainly possible without having to enable an OC mod at a certain time. Also my permission is given to anyone wants to do this, I'm not sure if it was made clear in the readme but people are allowed to freely add to and or modify KR, 100% modder friendly :D.

Thanks for the good info/news Ionis the Bear! With your permissions granted, maybe this mod might see the light of day... one day.
If I had more free time to work on mods, I'm sure I would of already tried this out. Why can't the US be more like Germany where they only work 30 hours a week?
