News to me

H0RSE posted this on the SD forums:

“What we just saw at this event was we found people that never played the game before, weren’t speaking to each other, but were cooperating in a really tactical way – now that’s really hard to do over the internet. But without any voip, although we do have that in the game, but only for your friends list, so you’ll never get anyone completely anonymous, just yelling abuse down your ear.” - Ed Stern

So apparently, on top of having to essentially opt in to voip, it only works on your friends list. I wonder if that goes for all platforms. Either way, can't really complain. I think it's a good idea.

So you can't talk to anyone unless they are on your friends list? Am i reading this correctly?

I understand their reasoning, but I think it's just a bit too much of the good stuff. Its fun to get to know these few people who communicate good.

Pretty much. But hey, if you like enjoyed with someone, it shouldn't be that hard to add them to your friends list. There's no reason that you can't or shouldn't.

HOLD UP!!! You mean this game doesn't allow for team speak AT ALL? That can't be...

Like I can understand a mute option but there are times I don't have anyone on my list playing Halo or BC2 for example...I'd want to comunicate with the people in the game. I can't imagine a studio would do something like that...thats a huge killer of a mulitplayer aspect if they do...I mean its a team based game for starters!

Please tell me it aint true. (xbox player btw)

They have to be on your friends list.

BC2 has a similar mechanic - can only talk with squads. Brink has Fireteams - join one.

Ah, so, it'll open up chat if I'm on a "squad/fireteam". Well, thats good. I wouldn't understand completely cutting off chat. My list is full as it is...I can't add every last person I think is good in a game and I know not all my friends will be playin Brink whenever I am. As long as its at minimum what BC2 did, I'm good. But thats the minimum for me or I ain't buying lol.

No they said in an early interview that open like-team chat is a feature that can be turned on or off but as default it was set to friends only.

Well, that's debatable then. Depending on how early the interview was, anything could have changed by now. As far as I knew, you always had to opt-in to voip, but this is the first I've heard of it being friends-only.

I think the voip [off] option is actually the voip [friends only] option, and the voip [on] option simply allows everyone to hear each other (on the same team of course).

Stern's quote doesn't rule that out as a possibility, so maybe. The language is kind of ambivalent to that degree.

Forgive my noobness to this forum and much of the game other than pictures but what does voip stand for?

I understand teh reasoning behind this. But like Tune sais above this post it should be able to be turned on or off. if iam playing with a good group of people and i want to get to see how they play i dont want to have to friend them and then listen to them id rather listen to them then muste them. friends should always be turned on and the CC (computer commander) should tell everyone what your going to do so it kinda works but still skeptical

Someone completely missed what he said AFTER THAT.

Looks like most fans here don't realize that not every journalist out there probably isn't riveted to their seat awaiting any news available regarding Brink and, thus, most likely isn't aware that this is/was a known feature all along. Stepping in to try the game for the first (or second, third, whatever) time and realizing all of a sudden that VoIP works only with his friends most likely sounded like a novel idea to him. He might not have been aware that the option to have team-wide speak on was another option...

Or, as REV pointed out, he might have known and simply expressed it a bit vaguely... :)
