[Early WIPz] Reclaim Gnisis from the Legion

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:16 pm

"My husband was murdered by a legionnaire and now you come asking for his land. You will never get his land. I will fight you and all of Gnisis will fight you until all you foreigners leave us in peace. Now get out of my house."
"My husband went to the Eggmine and never came home. He knew the mine was closed by you foreigners and guarded by the Legions, but we had no fresh kwama eggs. If you want to help me, go the mines and find out the truth."

-Widow Vabdas

Vanilla MW gives you the option to side with the Legion, and (optionally) helping the widow. However, you cannot directly support the anti-Legion sentiments in Gnisis. I have started writing dialogue for a small personal mod to give anti-Imperial player characters who do not join the Legion that freedom of choice.

You start the quests by talking to Hetman Abelmawia. If you're Archmaster (or Hortator) of Redoran, he'll tell you about the murder of Mansilamat Vabdas, and humbly ask you to visit the widow. You'll basically follow non-Legion versions of the first two Legion quests - http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Widow_Vabdas%27_Deed and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Gnisis_Eggmine_%28quest%29 - with some dialogue tweaks, after which the Hetman tells you that House Redoran should be the ones handling security in Gnisis, not the thieving, murderous and incompetent Legion.

Suggestions are welcome and appreciated. And yes, it's compatible with Great House Dagoth.

If possible please try to make this mod compatible with http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1106876-early-wipz-house-redoran-expanded/page__st__120.[In their mod redoran can take over Caldera It might have quests that affect Gnisis too but I don't know if it will]
Also any mod that makes house redoran more powerful sounds good to me and weakens the empires grip sounds good to me

If you kill Vantinius, you can no longer achieve highest rank in Imperial Legion tho. Otherwise, this idea seems very good.

True, but it doesn't make much sense to achieve the highest rank in the Legion, then try to kick them out of Gnisis. It's one of those things that you don't play this mod if you don't want to accept the consequences. This is a great idea, Alexx. Good luck with it. :)

I have started writing dialogue for a small personal mod to give anti-Imperial player characters (currently Redoran, but I might tweak it to work for e.g. House Dagoth characters who are Redoran Hortator) who do not join the Legion that freedom of choice.

Needless to say, something like that would interest me greatly. Along with Caldera, Gnisis is a town I've always wanted to give entirely back to Redoran. :)

Thanks everyone!

Fenyx: I know, I've completed the Legion questline several times. This is for anti-Legion characters, right? For them, removing the temptation to join might be a plus. I'll put a warning in the readme. Of course, if you don't accept Hetman Abelmawia's new quests, you can still join the Legion.

Compatibility is high up on my list. Pax Redoran will be compatible, in fact, it was the main source of inspiration.
The MPP makes Varus' corpse persist and instead adds a script that removes him after a few days. I'll probably duplicate some of that for compatibility reasons (e.g., so that he won't remain in the Arena Pit forever).
The Farmer Mod has a Redoran guard inside the Farmer's Guild... Perfect.
Some popular mods add generic Imperial Guards to Gnisis; small patches that remove or replace these spawns might be added. The fact that all vanilla Legion members in Gnisis have unique IDs was another source of inspiration, by the way.

I'll put a few hours per weekend into this; it shouldn't take more than a few weeks, since it's almost entirely dialogue.

The first two quests are done. It was pretty fun to write dialogue for those familiar quests from the viewpoint of the opposing side.

I'll add the option for a Redoran Hortator to start the first quest. I'll check if Great House Dagoth uses the vanilla journal entry for being the Hortator.

When I've made the third quest, I'll post a link to a beta.

well i dont know if Helena had anything in mind for Gnisis, if she does ill try to make it compatible with this, and in worse case scenario we'd have to make a patch to remove our Gnisis quests so that its compatible.but hopefully that wont have to happen, im glad to see that the community is starting to build up house Redoran now, and not just the Telvanni:)

Here was the first untested WIP version for the curious (link deleted since it's obsolete):

[link removed]

Some important stuff is missing, such as the new Redoran NPCs after completion of the quest.
Don't add this permanently to a savegame you care about.

I do have something in mind, and I'm afraid it won't be compatible (as it stands it's part of the 'storyline' I have planned for the mod). But not everyone is going to want to play our mod, so there's nothing wrong with having alternative versions.

Aw, that's sad news.

In other sad news, one of the scripts in the untested WIP is broken. Fixed - and still untested ;) :
[obsolete link deleted, updated version will be posted soon]

Some good news is that Great House Dagoth does use the default journal entry. So if the PC joins House Dagoth (or, say, Telvanni) and becomes Redoran Hortator, all is OK.

That's good to hear. That's the exact situation my player character is in. Thanks for thinking about those of us who have GHD in our game. :)

So, I actually tested it in-game and found some amazing bugs. Dialogue for Llerar Mandas erroneously assigned to Arethan Mandas, a couple of missing scripts etc...

I added new Redoran guards outdoors and in some interiors. The Barracks are replaced by a mostly copy-paste Redoran Barracks cell after the quest. Sadly, the path grid did not get copied; might make a new one. Fort Darius is empty except for Chaplain Ogrul, perhaps this can be justified by the new garrison still being understaffed and legionnaires passing through getting to use it as a hostel.

I saw that the latest version of PAX Redoran adds plenty of dialogue to Hetman Abelmawia. Apparently, he doesn't like orcs. He also gives you a quest to station a lone Redoran guard outside of his hut. I think I'll make a small compatibility patch so that the Hetman's dialogue will reflect the changes. Not sure I'll make any patches for LCV or MCA, just imagine that any legionnaires are simply passing through, and not officially part of the city garrison.

Whew, lots of Real Life stuff came in between.

I added a pathgrid to the Redoran Barracks and tweaked a few dialogue responses. The guard captain got her name from an old Redoran/Temple zealot player character of mine.

This is about as far as I plan to develop the mod for the near future. Here's a beta version:
