Leveling system

Post » Mon Feb 21, 2011 3:50 am

I imagine there are threads on this already. If so can someone please point me in the right direction, if not; here is my question.

Just how the heck does the leveling system work in this game? i am playing Oblivion after first playing Fallout3 whose leveling system could not be simpler. Acquire points for actions you do, everything from killing creatures to completing quests will make you acquire points that you can see on a leveling bar as it happens.

Obilivion seems to be different but I can't tell how yet! It says to concentrate on your main skills to level up, but it only levels up sometimes after I wake up from a well deserved sleep. Sometimes the amount of skills that get leveled up are different as well. I once had all my skills level up by 2 or three plus the three skills I had to choose to personally level up. while other times I get the level up screen and only two or three of my skills have been upgraded.

Anyways, any help is appreciated.

cheers

In Oblivion you get experience from using a skill. In my opinion this is more realistic than Fallout 3. In FO3 for example, you can get to 100 skill in big guns without ever having fired a big gun.

You get the level up notification when you increase 10 major skills.

One tricky part is that the attribute bonuses depend on how many major and minor skills you increase before leveling up. So it pays to use both major and minor skills. And also since the world scales to your characters level, if you get poor attribute bonuses you can get relatively weaker when leveling up. So increasing character level too fast can be bad.

It is a bit complicated and kludgy in my opinion. More info is here:

leveling up is bad lol. Thanx man, In my opinion I think you're right about FO3 leveling not being too realistic. I agree that a character shouldn't level up in a skill that he/she hasn't used. Thanks for the link!

I read somewhere that this was the whole point. In Oblivion you don′t get rewarded for leveling up too much too fast. They seem to want you to balance it out rather than leveling up your character to the point not even a legion of ogres can beat you.

Or something like that

I think part of it was a lot of people I know use to agree that you could become way to powerful and do it very fast in morrowind, it got toned down a lot in Oblivion.
Really it's up to your play style how you want to level up you'll probably have a preference once you get the hang of the level up system. When you first start you might wanna level up slower and get to know the game a bit more, when you know the quirks of the game and had a few characters you might wanna level up quicker since you know what you're doing.
I like increasing one major skill 10 points, use a trainer for a minor skill 5 times, then train 1 minor skill 1 time on my own.

I played probably 500 hours of Oblivion this summer, and loved it. Been contemplating going back and playing some more, but the one thing that is weighing on my mind is that godforsaken leveling system.
