Stealing from Other Games

Post » Tue Feb 22, 2011 2:39 am

If it would work well in a TES game, use it and paraphrase (slight modification).

Out-and-out "stealing" without modification to streamline and integrate with the rest of the game would, of course, produce a disjointed atmosphere and gameplay mechanics.

Besides, it isn't really stealing, per se. Many of these mechanics are present in other games, including previous TES games.
Mounted combat
climbing and parkour
locational damage and locational attacks
MOAR GORE!!!!11!
non-combat activities (small jobs, gambling, hunting, crafting, etc)
Interactive environments that also respond to physics
good NPC AI
Large Lush Landscapes

I think you meant to post this in the suggestions thread as this isn't stealing from another game, just stuff you want to see.

Repeated character interactions- See Legend of Mana, FO3 (Wasteland survival guide quest), and many others. Basically, I want people who give out a series of quests not tied to a faction or the main quest.

Quick tutorial- See Borderlands for how to get the character in game quickly.

Smaller popups- Again, see the first few minutes of Borderlands for an idea how to do it.

Skill and Stat-based dialogue options- Fallout 3, so it's probably way too hard for Bethesda

multi-stage traps on locks- Return to Krondor

bandits that don't necessarily attack on sight- Borderlands has this.

Edit: Oh yeah. Borderlands also tells me what quests are in what area (a bit easier in that game, though: few areas, no moving quests, etc). It would be nice to have something similar in TESV: when I go to City #4, I can pull up a list of quests that involve specific destinations that "are nearby", where "nearby" might be "NPC lives in this city, but he's not here" if that's what it takes to make it happen. It would cut down on the amount of fast travel needed :)

I think the three main games I can think of at the moment that ESV should take some cues from are Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption, and Dark Messiah. Okay, I've never actually played Dark Messiah, but the combat system looks amazing (though a little over the top concerning too many finish moves and too easy to tear people apart) and the combat and magic seem to interact more with the environment. Red Dead because that seriously set the bar for all freeform games now. The world is just so damn detailed and there are so many things you can do beside questing. But what Red Dead seriously lacks is characterization element of a good RPG. No matter what you actually did, your character is seen as a paragon of virtue and a good guy. What Mass Effect beats that in is that ME gives you the option of acting like an [censored], and it affects the game. People will react to some of your dike moves. Although in Mass Effect the evil you could do was limited to the missions and your crew doesn't care so much.

Mass Effect also had excellent writing, given the first one was surprisingly similar in storyline to kotor (at one point I actually forgot which I was playing), but the second one was all good imo. It also didn't force your character to say a line you really wouldn't, you could be anything from cynical to idealist. That was nice.
They had great atmosphere as well. In a few spots the game had this great Blade Runner feel to it.

The whole stealth system could be ripped off from the Thief saga.
Technically, i would like to reinforce the importance of the source of lights, the possibility to put them out to increase the shadows as well as taking into account the noise done by your character. (no more sneaking around indoor in full plate armor please)

The stealth system of Oblivion was already better than Morrowind's. If Bethesda goes a little farther in that direction, they can do something great.

(Also, as in Mirror's Edge, being able to see your feet adds a lot of realism for me.)

I'm so surpised all FPS havn't added this, most have but still a LOT do not.

I remember an old dinosaur game i played on PC back before 2000. I don't remeber the name of the game, but you were a chick that had a tattoo of heart on her chest, and you had to look at the tattoo to see how much health you had. Its not a good example, but its been done before.

When I look down in real life I see my body, legs, feet, hands. being able to see all that in game would have so much realism for me.

Also I have to agree that Dark Messaih's combat system was amazing.

EDIT - Wow that bothered me so I went and looked through my old games, it was called Jurassic Park: Trespasser.

Thief like stealth.

And we need to ride flying creatures. I can't live without it, not after seeing AVATAR.

I like the Mirror's Edge and Duke Nukem examples. Interactivity. Immersion.

No, no. Many of these you can find in the OP. I'm mentioning the ones that I have seen in games other than those listed in the OP (Fable, etc).

ill add another dark messiah combat, the rope bow and being able to set people on fire after launching an oil jar at them was fun as well. also dark messiahs magic system was way better than TES magic. i especially liked making people slip on ice.

mount and blade style horse combat.

mortal kombat fatalities.

pulse rifles from avp

randomized loot that is useful and fun to look for like in diablo

thief style put out lights climbing etc.

super mario brothers style kill someone if you jump on top of them.

NOTHING FROM WOW. their armor svcks, their character models svck, pretty much everything about WoW svcks. especially the lame whack a mole combat.

i never played mirros edge, but i did like the first person animations in far cry 2. it also prevented spamming healing since if you were applying a bandage you actually had to stop and do it. gothic and risen do teh same by making you stop and actually drink a potion instead of instant heal. i really wish they would put that in there.

horse should take damage if your racing. as much as i love gran turismo games they teach you really bad driving habits that dont carry over into real life very well.

I would just like to say this: Creating all the provinces of TES is next to impossible with todays technology. And other continents as well? That's more than impossible. At least if you want it to look better than a steaming pile of donkey-excrement. So, yeah...
Not to mention that all those different countries, towns, races and whatnot would probably take a decade or two to create, let alone make it look good. So: how about no?

And I find this particular part very funny: "...it will add the lands of Oblivion and the heavens..." and so on, and so forth. Are you actually implying that Oblivion is Hell, and that there therefore must be a place called "Heaven"? You amuse me. A lot.

It worked in Entropia Universe, I see no reason why TES can't do better...

Here's what I'd like to see lifted from other games:

Red Dead Redemption

-Ecology (wildlife)
-Outdoor rural areas
-Small towns (towns in RDR should be the model for the smaller villages in TESV)
-Random mini-quests

Assassin's Creed

-Animations (really, just shamelessly rip them from the disc, if at all possible)
-Climbing (it doesn't have to be as prevalent as it is in AC, just have it here and there)
-Cities (I want each major city in TESV to be at least the size of one district of an AC city)

Bioware Games

-Stronger story
-Making major characters into people we'll care about
-Quality voice acting

Fable

-Body morphs (not the morality-based ones, but the idea of stat-based morphs would be good)

I say it's only stealing if it was implemented badly, if it was done well it's "Inspired by"

Anyway there are a lot of games I'd suggest to take from... though i cant think off any at the moment :P

And I as well. Morality is best left ambiguous for ES.

I would like to see them borrow more adventure elements from games like Quest for Glory, such as items you acquire can be used for puzzle solving and also more intricate npc relationships, another thing that I want is Climbing to be a skill.

Arena and Daggerfall somewhat managed to make them. Surely with heavy randomization they could be done now too, but graphics and such wouldn't be anything by today's standards. It could still look a lot better than Daggerfall did. The hardware today even on Xbox360 is easily atleast ten times better than it was 10 years ago on PCs.

GTA style small and detailed "world" vs. old TES style huge but random/messy world. I really don't know which I'd prefer. Old TES style would definitely be the more original one. However from Bethesda's perspective going for small world is definitely the right choice as it means the game will look better and its main mechanics will act better (mainstream gamers go OMG) and they still have more provinces to use in future games.

Playable instruments (Lord of the Rings Online)

The way it works is that you press a number from 1 to 9 on the keyboard and that will create a tone, you can then hold down shift or ctrl to raise or lower the tone. You're then able to play a flute, lute, drum and what have you.

(I have no idea of how this might work on console though)

Or at least you could have a notebook where you can buy pieces or music and then select them and play them on the equipped instrument. Imagine making a living as a street musician.

Two words: sticky grenades.

I really just wanna see more options with armor and clothing. I don't think every Daedric armor set needs to be identical...oh and rocketlaunchers.

Left 4 Dead: The AI Director. Implemented well, could make for a more enjoyable experience than static spawn points. Could also add some intelligence to "random" loot to cut down on potions and so on to make you feel your resources stretch as you go deeper, while sometimes giving you a helping hand when you needed. Maybe add some environmental hazards that it could trigger or not, depending on the mood it was trying to set.

Dark Messiah: Being able to look down and see your body, combat, and movement(I dont like how the camera in Morrowind and Oblivion look like your just floating.
GTA 4: Physics
Fable 2: Economy (they weren't really able to pull this off but maybe Bethesda could and add banks)
Daggerfall: More randomized quest for guilds that don't actually have anything to do with the guild main quest, it's just for extra money.
The Witcher: Lines of morality are heavily blurred and darker themes and atmosphere.
Assassin's Creed: Animations and climbing.
