Cleaning the special edition Septim coin?

Post » Fri Feb 25, 2011 1:26 pm

Hello

I was not sure if this should go in the Community Discussion board or in here. But I thought since it was to do with the version of Oblivion I got it would be best served being posted here.

But basically, the Septim coin I got with the special edition of Oblivion back when it first came out has lost it's shine over the years, which is rather unsurprising really considering it's a coin and meant to be an accurate replica. I wanted to go about cleaning it up and making it look nice and shiny again. I know they say Coke is a good idea for cleaning coins up and takes 5 minutes at least but before I blindly rush in and probably ruin the coin I wanted to to verify what the best method was from the fanbase on here.

I did do a forum search and a Google search to see if anyone had attempted this and found nothing. I know it seems like such a trvial thing to do but as I have never cleaned coins before I didn't want to try on a collectors item in case I ruin it. I hope someone can help me clear this up. (no pun intended!)

Be very cautious with what ever method of cleaning you use, my septim has an silvery beard just from friction from when I stored it in the collectors edition box. The layer of coloring seems to be rather thin.

Actually, I don't even remember it ever being shiny..

I don't ever remember my coin being shiny, it just always looked worn like the coins in-game.

Of course it's still in it's original little bag, so that may have done something to it.

Mine was never shiny either, but it's a very dark-brown now. While I'd never call it shiny, I definitely remember it being more golden and less brown in color, looks almost rusted now.

Mine was sort of shiny on the top, but when I started this topic it was quite brown. But i've seen versions about and copies friends had which were shiner and more golden.

I tried the coke method and it did restore it somewhat, is looking better now, shiner but still dull in parts. Did have a a little silver spot on the beard where it must have rubbed off as the years went by.

Mine was dull to begin with, pretty sure it was meant to be like that. The other shinier ones you saw must have been shined up after purchase.

Leave it as it is and just put a label under it calling it a "deviated Septim."
