Different Fighting Styles

Post » Sun Feb 27, 2011 4:43 am

I'm hoping that in skyrim you have different choices in combat styles. More specifically choosing which types of attack animations you make in the game. From a Disciplined Japanese swordsman to a medieval knight or a very agile ninja like combat, instead of the old boring repetitive swipes. I like to see my character develop from clumsy amateur to a master swordsman that doesn't rely on better swords to kill.

Would be nice.

Of course, I'm hoping that they don't do what they did in Oblivion and make Melee characters viable until you hit 30... at which point you're repairing. Every. Bit. Of. Equipment. After. Every. Fight...

In more detail, I'm talking about the different stances and unique attacks you can do with each skill class. Thus each class determines your strategy. You can use combat movements like the acrobatic Shaolin monk, the precise samurai, or the familiar European knight.

Not sure if I follow you there, classes are out of Skyrim... Nonetheless, I think there is some truth in what you point out. At least they should do something to make a difference in characters swings. Although I think the most realistic thing would be to actually put in certain demands on using pieces of armor or weapons. Honestly, a level 1 Wood Elf thief (or whatever stealth class, they are out anyway) with 30 in strength, can wield a 60 pound claymore the same way a big Nord level 20 warrior would. I know that the skills make the sword less effective for the Wood Elf, but it looks exactly the same as with the Nord and I think it ought to be impossible for the Wood Elf to actually swing the blade at all. That would be a way of fixing it for me: making you need for instance a certain level of strength (or other relevant attributes) to wield certain weapons (materials, size, weight), and the obviously make unique animations depending on the weapon in hand (you simply swing the blade differently if it's a short blade or a dagger than you would a long sword or claymore). :poke:

I'm agreeing with the above post. I don't think that the OP would go to well with TES in general and would be extremely difficult to implement, especially the range of things you seem to want. Different animations for each weapon would be good, but I can't see having all the different fighting styles working well at all.

I would really like to see some form of a martial art as unarmed. Devastating kicks to the face and groin, punches to the temple and face also, with perhaps a strike to the throat as your finishing move.

Yeah that would be way better than the unarmed skill in Oblivion - which i still kind of enjoyed in a sadistic way ;)

Yes I definitely agree that unarmed needs to be: Not completely useless as a combat skill OR Fun and interesting to use OR both!!! (what an interesting new thought! *grumbles*)

I've seen some really impressive animation mods and seeing how modders can change so much of the game I say this is not impossible. I love all rpgs and i wouldn't mind if this post gets ignored.

Maybe you can role-play a bit if they have different animations for different weapon styles? I dunno. I'm almost certain they won't be implementing different fighting styles though because it seems like you'd need a skill dedicated to each and well, being that we already know that that isn't going to happen. If you have any suggestions how they could implement the different fighting styles successfully and not have some completely outway others and make the player get better at the style as they get more skilled (remember, it can't be a skill), then go ahead, suggest away and I'll be very happy if you or someone else comes up with a good one.

Btw, no post that contributes to the topic should get ignored. If you were talking about my post, you sound like you're 9. If you were talking about your own post, then I suggest not saying that as it weakens a potentially good argument. Also it would be nice if you cleared up whether it was my post or your's that you think should get ignored.

I also thought about this.

I like to think their are special teachers who teach specific combat styles, while others are just learned by you.

Every 25 skill levels you can pick a new animation set of combat moves. Mostly cosmetic really.

And when your at a certain level or have mastered the 4 basic combat styles, you can find teachers of more advanced or specific styles.

Sorry I should clarify, I meant the topic instead of the post.
