dwemer. yeah, you heard me! Discussion thread for speculatio

Correction, they've been around since redguard.

I appreciate the fact they are in Skyrim, not just as fan service but because it seems like they SHOULD be there. There was a Dwemer Ruin in Redguard (set in Hammerfell) so there's nothing saying they can't be much further then Vvardenfell. Mind you they DID have airships afterall. As it's been mentioned already Todd mentioned some of the cities originated by Dwemer settlements so again it makes sense there are still a few around. According to the map there's only a few ruins this time though so I am sure they will be a rare gem. What I find amazing is that their machines are STILL working, they were super old in Morrowind so by now they are truly ancient! Amazing!

What about the Falmer? Might we even seen some Ayleid ruins to spice up the variety a bit more?

My theory - It wasn't the Chimer who were turned into the Dunmer. It was the Dwemer.

I don't really have any strong evidence for this XD but I remember someone saying that it was odd that the Chimer were punished in the Battle of Red mountain when the Dwemer were the ones causing trouble. I don't remember much about this so I dunno what they did, but that leads to my out-there theory. The Chimer all died in battle as well.

I believe that there will be a mix of Falmer and Dwemer ruins with a bit of the civilization of men mixed in. Ayleid's most likely won't be in Skyrim because the mighty Ayleids ruled Cyrodiil and enslaved all!!!

I think Dwemer is the new Ayleid.

I hope there is going to be more dungeon diversity than Oblivion.

Hopefully, we'll be seeing a lot more of their ruins/artifacts over any of the others. They're the least elaborated on out of all of them. I couldn't care less about Ayleid or Dwemer ruins, I'm more interested in finding out what happened to the (possibly fictional) Snow Elves. That's a mystery that hasn't been cracked yet.

i just hope the walls are made of bronze like in morrowind (although it didnt look bronze due to graphics at the time) rather than the silver crap we got in the orrey.

bronze is cool. its original- there arent many shiney brown structures around.

the centurion apeared to be bronze, so thats ok.

(and dwemer were VERY heavily related to morrowinds plot)

Their ruins would be good places to put crafting recipes and exotic forges. Maybe?

I wouldn't say they were copy and paste. The big recurring themes in an advanced civilization is planned cities. Thus one could argue that the Ayleid ruins are just planned cities that used similar aspects. People have to get over the "copy and paste" aspect of the dungeons, EVERYONE DOES IT!!!! It cuts down on production time to use prefabricated sections and rearrange them in unique ways. Technically, not one ruin in Oblivion was the same. It's not like Bethesda is lazy, everyone that has to make dungeons on a large scale uses several areas multiple times. I for one thought the Ayleid ruins were wonderous. Also, most of the Ayleid entrances are unique, several of them were beautiful, with statues of different beings and ruins of what would've been beautiful architecture.

More than likely just ruins. As they were in Morrowind.

Did we play the same Morrowind? The Dwemer were an centrall plot point in the game I played.

Actually he did say some of those towns were ancient Dwemer towns that Nords moved into over the centuries

Ok, he said "Epic Cities that have been carved into mountains by dwarves long ago, that these guys have moved into" and he didn't specify who "these guys" are.

Somehow I think "These guys" will be "The current, living races who we are familiar with and not some totally random other group of people whom it would not make sense to refer to so casually".

Comes down to creatively making each dungeon unique though, which also depends a lot on the set of models you have available. Even if each dungeon is unique, if they all share the same elements, like a long hallway with traps, that leads to a large room with treasure, but this one bends right while that one bends left, they tend to feel the same. I'm not saying I thought they were all the same, but I do wish they had added something creative and unique to each dungeon, like a room or areas that you could specifically recognize as belong to that dungeon and only that dungeon.

Whenever I would make interiors in the Morrowind Construction Set, especially for a dungeon, that was my goal, find something that would make this dungeon unique, by using pieces in unconventional ways(however, then the player shouldn't be able to spot that you are doing that) or adding a "background story" to it by items you place. Even if it was a small insignificant dungeon I could usually find something to make it interesting.

I thought a lot of the dungeons were interesting, but then some certainly seemed to just be plain repeats of others. It was hit or miss IMO.

Somehow I think "These guys" will be "The current, living races who we are familiar with and not some totally random other group of people whom it would not make sense to refer to so casually".

I imagined bandits. I don't really see the Nords turning them into viable settlements. I'm thinking the Dwemer ruins is basically just shelter now for whoever finds them convenient.

1) It was definitely the Chimer who were turned. Divayth Fyr was turned ( Chimer ) the Tribunal were turned ( Chimer ) and these people were alive at the time of the turning. The Dunmer are not the Dwemer.
2) The Dwemer were in Vvardenfell first and then the Chimer came. The Chimer had as much right to tell the Dwemer what to do as the someone coming into your house has in telling you what to do. The Chimer were the ones sticking their noses where it they shouldn't have been.

Hey, as long as we have dwemer centurions and the like in the game I'm happy. I personally can't wait for a mod that will allow you to build them. I'd love to have a squad of spheres rolling around to back me up.

Blatant self-promotion incoming: If you still play Morrowind then you can try my mod when I'm finished. I have a list of just over 40 devices and constructs that the player can build through a magecrafting process and real-time airships the player can control:

I must say, I just watched the vid for that Dwemer Airship, and that is impressive. Though, it does look about as complicated to fly as I would expect a Dwemer Airship to be, but I bet that is part of the fun.

Hopefully we will get enough resources to do something like this in Skyrim too, because I know I'll be wanting a Dwemer Airship there as soon as soon as I've cleared the skies of dragons!

Thanks, it took a while to get everything working and yeah the interface is a little complicated atm but its the first version. I'll be simplifying it for release. As soon as I heard Skyrim had dragons I wanted to blow one out of the sky with an airship :). Hopefully there'll be enough resources for me to put one together because I can't model that well yet.
