More support for unarmed combat

Post » Wed Mar 02, 2011 6:41 am

I've always felt that unarmed was always misrepresented. In Morrowind, unarmed proved useful on rare moments against powerful enemies like Umbra where you had to drain fatigue to knock him outcold, then slice and dice him, but overall, punching a rat 15 times to kill it didn't prove useful as a weapon focus. In Oblivion, it was very boring and played like the other weapon skills except unarmed didn't scale well compared to Swords.

My ideas to fix this:

  • Give gauntlets and gloves damage values (Those daedric gloves always looked exceptionally painful)
  • Allow gloves to have 'On hit' enchants (Unarmed only)
  • A combo system (Like Diablo 2 Assassins or a fighting game button combination list, your choice)
  • Unarmed Spells (Like say an Air Render in Final Fantasy Tactics)

Oh and last but not least, KICKS.

Combat is supposed to be way more dynamic, so there's some open-ness for combos and such.

Hopefully the perks system should make unarmed combat a better proposition. Hope so. Nothing brings a glow of satisfaction like the first time you kill a Brown Bear with your bare hands ( no pun intended ).

It would also be cool if they added some claw type of weapons too, or other types of short discrete weapons that could be pulled out in middle of combat, and definitely kicks, but they have to be integrated well.

I would prefer that they re-added a working unarmored "skill" into the game first.

I also don't see the player punching a dragon to death...unless we get a extremely over the top martial art with combos.

Its hard to say that H2H should be effective. Give any martial artist a knife and he could kill faster ( especially against an armored foe) however its definitely not ineffective either. I think it would be interesting if they combined H2H with other melee skills. so leveling H2H allows for things like kicking or pushing, pulling and attacks of opportunity in the midst of swordplay. Almost like having a second "fighting" skill in addition to a weapon skill. and the best way to level it would be to fight unarmed. How this would be implemented, I'm not even interested in suggesting. Use your imagination. We should all be thankful that H2H didn't go the way of the unarmored skill of Morrowind's I am also disappointed with how its almost ignored as a viable alternative. I've always wanted a pacifist Jujitsu user that defends and incapacitates instead of kills. but even if you knocked someone out before you killed them, they just got back up and kept fighting...As for things like brass knuckles, i think it kind of defeats the purpose of being unarmed.edit: I could also see merging H2H with acrobatics... which would make them both more viable, usable, and believable.

True but I think the point of dropping unarmored was because most characters that used it were mages. Being mages one would expect them to enchant their gear which can become a ton more powerful then regular armor. I just don't see it ever coming back. As for H2H it would be nice to see some improvement, the nicest thing about Oblivion is it did damage to health and fatigue which made it a tad more useful. But it still doesn't scale well and for fairly obvious reasons. It would be next to impossible to win a fight against a heavily armored opponent. You would probably break all the bones in your hands before he even started to sweat in his armor from standing in the sun.

Yeah I'd like to see more support for unarmed. Grappling would be cool too. Choke holds, heh. But I think that is just dreaming. I modded my oblivion character recently, upping hand to hand to 240, strength to 240, athletics and all that to 240. Imperial guards still kick my ass, but anyone that isn't armed I hit them once and they fly through the air, dead before they hit the ground. Which is really funny.

I do wish though, and hope for Skyrim that hand to hand doesn't kill but knocks them out. Maybe a further hit once unconscious kills them, but while standing just a KO.

Maybe, they were just ideas, not just for hand-to-hand combat.

I like the idea of being able to use it like a second fighting skill, it could make wielding a single weapon more useful too, compared to dual wielding and two-handed weapons.

I wonder, if you don't equip one hand, can you punch with it?

I don't like to advertise but I already had a thread on here.

Use the search button next time.

And yes I would love gauntlets to give a damage boost to unarmed fighting.

^This^. My theory is that unarmed will be used as a supplement to other weapons. Leaving your left hand unfilled, will let you use it to block/disarm/unbalance your foe. Exactly like a shield. . . So there is that.
