Removing the footsteps sound?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 5:32 am

I really hate the player footsteps sounds, is there a mod that disables it completely? Turning it to 0 in the .ini and lowering it to zero in the options doesnt seem to disable it, occasionally they're still there (e.g when standing still and then starting to move you'll hear 3-4 steps very loud and then it'll stop). I guess making a new empty sound file would work, maybe there's a mod like that already?

Also, where's Morrowind storing its sounds? It's not in the BSA, or at least the BSA unpackers i've tested doesnt find "sound" or even "music" in the morrowind.bsa.

nvm, i just modded the footstep sound files :)

Maybe I just haven't played for too long, but isn't there an option to increase or reduce the footstep sound in options menu?

yes but like i said, it doesnt work that well, at least not for me, the steps can still be heard a few times really loud when you stand still and then start moving, really irritating..

Vurt, this may or may not be good news to you, but that sound seems to be integrated into the base animations. Specifically, the Xbase_anim.kf and the Xbase_anim_female.kf files. They're probably also in the beast specific xbase kf file(s), but I haven't seen it for myself. You might be able to change the sounds in the CS under Sounds and SoundGen, but as far as I can tell the actual sounds for the footsteps are in the animation files and would need to be changed using a program like Nifskope.

Unfortunately, this is about as far as I've gotten into my research on the subject; I started searching, because I too greatly dislike the footstep sounds. Sounds, soundgen and particularly sounds in .kfs appear to be one of the best kept secrets in morrowind modding. If you find a tutorial, please let me know.

It was easy to mod, i just opened the sounds up (they're in data files/sounds/foot) in soundforge and turned the volume down to zero and saved, no more foot steps :)

Thanks so much! I'll give that a try, I was running in circles trying to slow down the footsteps in a modded kf file and I could have just lowered the volume the whole time. BTW, mine is in data files\sound\fx\foot\ . :D

You can also open up the CS and go to Gameplay->Sounds, find the appropriate sound files and set their volume to zero. Then just save the .esp, tick it and load up the game. I did this for the armor hit sounds. For some reason those sounds would blow my ears out but no other sound effect would.

Which now the Code Patch fixes for us, without eliminating the sound altogether.
Perhaps it could also have the option to eliminate the footsteps, since it seems like a lot of us are annoyed by them.

There's an ini entry as well for it. I wonder if that'll work any better.

No, it does nothing.

This is a great idea, but I liked the sound of other people's footsteps, so I know where they are. Like in dungeons.
