Am I the only one who prefers FO1 to 2?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:34 am

Having played both over and over from the time when the first was out, I still prefer the original. The story is a lot better in 2 but it seems the second iteration is trying to do too much and the ambience and environments just dont impact me on the same level as the first. I could chalk it up perhaps to a romanticized first encounter but i feel a stronger connection to the characters in the first. Does anyone else prefer FO1 to 2?

No, not the only one. I prefer F1 but I play F2 more frequently.

I prefer Fallout tactics to the first two, but apparently not many other people do. :hugs: :slap: :swear: :cold:

I never liked some of F2 ideas - talking rat, talking molerat, ghost, and other rather controversial stuff although I must admittthat the possibilities in F2 are way, I mean way grater.

Fallout was better as an original story. I found Fallout 2 more fun because of all the extra stuff you can do in the game.

Fallout was just a better game. Fallout 2 had more stuff though. I really would have liked for alot of the improvements in 2 to be in 1, but they each have their charms.

I'd prefer Fallout 2 just for its glitch correction.

In terms of writing, though... Hmmm. I don't know. I guess I kind of disliked how FO1 left you basically clueless about where to go or what to do about the main quest. On the other hand, the argument can be made that the whole "Social Experiment" of the vaults was a pretty crazy thing to retcon.

Ya fallout 1 had a better story and it flowed VERY nice from start to finish.

I must say I just played it recently and it seemed almost too short.
FO2 is a fallout fans wetdream because there's just so much more to do which is really what FO fans wanted after beating FO1 and waiting for FO2.

I know cause I was one of those people. :0)

It's funny. I don't remember that....
Spoiler
I remember going into the Necropolis and finding a Water Chip by accident, then meeting about four big mutants who wanted to take me somewhere; I refused, and was forced to kill them after they attacked me. Then the Overseer told me that someone was making mutants, even though I'd only met four, and told me to go kill them all. It took me a long time to find the Military base because the only people who hinted at its existence were the BoS people who said it was "Somewhere north."

The only thing that WAS smooth was the part where I went to visit the followers of the apocalypse before going on to fight the Master in the Cathedral. Even then, it felt like most of the time I was bumbling around and discovering game content by accident rather than purposefully moving forwards; the whole psychic crown thing was not something I could have done deliberately.

I'll admit, the story as a whole fit together better than FO2's tale, which had some mysterious holes and contradictions with things in the previous game, but I would not describe my gaming experience as "Flowing" by any standard.

Oops... Sorry, after a while I just get used to talking to all the people who already know what I'm talking about and stop using spoiler tags. I'll fix it...

You do illustrate my point nicely, though. You'd probably never think to look there without some guidance, which you don't get.

That would make sense. I wouldn't be too worried about the Raiders, though; if you're between levels 12 and 21, and have good armor and weapons, you can probably take the raiders on, especially if you've got some of your buddies with you. Raiders are only a small step above Radscorpions, IMO. You can also try negotiating with them.

Lowly level 3, with my first character ever. I managed to sweet talk em before, but I was warned not to return.

Well, I love them both the same. Fallout 1 had a better story. I like the emergence from the Vault. Never really cared much for the tribal stuff. But I loved the car, NCR, Vault City, the drugs in Fallout 2, the prostitution...and with the addition of New Reno, Fallout 2 just seemed so much more darker and dirtier than Fallout 1. I mean, it really felt like a post-apocalyptic world should. And plus, it was bigger. Also,
Spoiler
the ending conversation with the president was oh so much fun.

order of like:

fallout
fallout 3
fallout tactics
other black isle games eg. planscape
fallout 2
every other game including my lil kity
fallout BOS

fallout 1 was great the time limit the vault dweller, the start if you played fallout 1 first the whole idea and setting up the story will be planted in your mind to the day the bombs hit. "war war never changes" its the first time you hear it for some maybe that first time was number 2 or even 3 but for me it was the first.

the way i beat the game in the the first hour of playing to release there was so much more. maybe a little longer it was a while back.

fallout 2 was good but the over the top random encounters destroyed the immersion.

there will never be a game that gave me the same feeling of a 50's blown to peaces than fallout.

If people could put the Fallout 1 game into the Fallout 2 game engine (little things like combat options for your companions, etc) then I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy FO1 more.

As it stands I like the FO1 story better, but the FO2 game better.
