So I beat fallout for the first time

Post » Thu Mar 10, 2011 2:03 pm

And while I love this game and find it quite immersive, I must say I am slightly disappointed in the main quest length and general ending.

Spoiler
I was expecting I was getting close to the end of the game while I was running through the streets covering (don't ask WHY we have to cover a giant robot that shoots lasers) the Liberty Prime. However I was expecting atleast 2-3 more hours following the Purification Plantt

With that being said, I effing loved this game, and this will warrant more time into my character, as well as possibly making another character who will hit every/all side quests in the game before completing it. I kind of also wish that

Spoiler
Fawkes was found in a different manner. I realize why they put Fawkes near the end of the game (Gattling Laser + perfect aim = I can hide behind this guy while he [censored] destroy's everything lol). But it would of been nice to have him on some of the earlier quests

Also, on first impression, I immediately loved him. I'v seen multiple people talk about how hes the best companion, and such. But just listening to his commentary while walking through the wasteland is way to awesome, and running out of the RavenRock with him, both of us toting massive gattling lasers, and me in my Tesla armor. God. So epic.

I will definitely play this file more now however, and I will spend alot of time just exploring with him because. Lets face it. Who the f*** has the balls to stand in our way when we are packing this much heat?
Time to find us some behemoths!

Yeah, the original ending was a bit abrupt.
You should really get the Broken Steel addon. It will give you some additional quests and lets you play for as long as you like. No ending :)

Haha.

This game kind of did the story line in abrupt pieces.
Spoiler

Like, he leaves and you go to look for him. Immediately you find out where he went. You go there, three dog tells you where he is. Boom, you go to Dr.Brauns little psycho world (abrupt wtf turn number one). Then you get out of the pods and talk to your dad. It feels pretty emotionless there (abrupt wtf happened turn number 2). Then you go to Rivet City with him, and he somehow convinces a bunch of scientists to do what he wants (wtf abrupt turn number 3). Then you go to Project Purity. Oh look, enclave is [censored] people. you need to run away (wtf abrupt turn number 4). Somehow 50 enclave appear underground with you (wtf abrupt turn number 5). Get away to citadel. Oh, you need something, talk to this guy. Oh look I know exactly where you can find a GECK (wtf abrupt turn number 6). Go get the GECK. Meet crazy ass Fawke and oh, look. I have the GECK, but was grenaded, kidnapped and the GECK was taken away (abrupt turn number 7 and 8 at the same time). Oh look, enclave are here, oh. The president wants to talk to me. (aburpt turn 9). Then he orders all the enclave to try to kill you for, no reason except to test you. (wtf abrupt turn 10). Meet the president. Hes a computer (wtf abrupt turn 11). Break out of RavenRock. Oh, Fawke, with a gattling laser, single handedly killing the entire enclave army (wtf abrupt turn 12).

And it just keeps going on and on and on, every single quest has some randomly wtf abrupt moment in it lol.

You missed something there. It wasn't the President who was trying to kill you, it was Col. Autumn. The Enclave was going through something of a civil war at that point, that's why they were all shooting at each other. They really could have done a better job of that story element, it was pretty weak the way it was. They could have built it up into something quite interesting, but it just ended up to be a muddle of confusion.

How is it bad? What would make it good? What is this "something quite interesting"?

Well as NinjaFish clearly indicates, they didn't make it at all clear what was going on. One moment you're off to see the President and next you're being hunted down and everyone is shooting at each other. They never make it plain that there's a coup going on, they just abruptly switch the action without giving you any information at all. They could have built the storyline there, maybe have Col. Autumn trying to enlist your support in order to gain control. As for making it interesting, you could have had the option to play one side against the other, join one or the other, or simply stay out of it completely. There could have been all sorts of politics the player could have engaged in instead of cluelessly wandering around Raven Rock, wondering why all these people were shooting at each other.

the colonel wants you dead but eden wants to use you. so there is civil going on between eden, who has the bots under his control and the humans there who are enclave members. .

Yes, but that's never clearly explained. Suddenly everyone is shooting at each other and the player doesn't have clue as to why. It was a pretty badly written storyline at that point.

That's kind of contradictory though, because Eden even indicates to you that the Enclave is strongly held together.

And the only indication he gives of issues are how him and the Colonel don't see "eye to eye" anymore, so he doesn't trust him to make decision. At no point does he say "Uh, my Colonel snapped and went bat-sh*t insane"

Hope you enjoyed Fallout 3, man! :) I expect you've got a lot of play time left, though.

I did actually enjoy Fallout 3's story, but looking back, you're right; it makes zero sense and there are gaping plot holes all over the place.

To be honest, I think the whole 'Eden puts his trust in a random (although very tough) wanderer to execute his master plan -- the Final Solution -- ridiculous. Okay, okay, he wasn't on good terms with Colonel Autumn, but the LW is the son of James (the guy the Enclave technically killed, even if James was a fool) -- the man who worked so many years of his life on Project Purity, which the good President want to, in a sense, sabotage.

Wouldn't it be much easier to order another very loyal servant of considerable rank to do the deed? Yes, he would have been privy to Eden's secret, but if he's truly loyal to the Enclave, he'd realise that doesn't matter.
Whatever way you look at it, it's a far better idea than asking your enemy...
