This is what Fallout 3 should've been

Post » Thu Mar 10, 2011 12:07 pm

Now that I'm well into the 30th hour of the game, and enjoying every minute of it, I can safely say that the writing, the setting and the openness of the world are much closer to the original two games, and miles beyond what we experienced in the Fallout 3. Obsidian did an excellent job at making what is, first and foremost, a Fallout game.
At this point I have pretty much repressed the fact that Fallout 3 existed at all. To me, New Vegas IS Fallout 3. It would be awesome if further Fallout games were created by Obsidian as well (oh, and bring Mark Morgan to compose some new ambient tunes, thanks!)

Does anyone else feel the same way?

no.

Obsidian took fallout 3's core and improved it. I have no doubt about that whatsoever. As far as its world is concerned its mediocre at best. Maybe if bethesda and obsidian teamed up then we would have had something amazing. All I get from FNV is an upgraded core system and a mediocre world.

Although Fallout 3 was my first foree into the Fallout world (and I've yet to try 1 or 2) I'm certainly enjoying New Vegas more. The mechanics and options are much better. I miss some stuff like playing from birth and some of the old scenery (the monuments in DC), but overall I think New Vegas is a step up. I too hope that Bethesda keep using Obsidian for the Fallout series (it would keep the in house studio free to work on TESV! We need that game damnit!).

I agree man, from I've played. Fallout New Vegas is Fallout 3 to me. I played the originals when I was 10 and this game brings back old memories. The story in Bethesda's Fallout wasn't cannon in my view.

Other then annoying bugs(but every obsidian game 've played had major bug issues) this is a great game. It merges fallout 2 with fallout 3. Balances the game out better then fallout 3 did, and they finially added a 9mm pistol! now if only they'd bring back to bozar

I got the white label collection, came with FO 1/2 and tactics for the PC.
Was about $19.99 a few years ago.

Actually, you can get Fallout 1, 2 & Tactics as a single CD group. Just look on Amazon.com if I remember right.

I always had the impression that the bugginess of Obsidian games stems from their sheer size; it is humanly impossible (read: uneconomical) to playtest a game that open to perfection, especially in the required timeframe.

I've had the game crash on me numerous times. I had a quest or two bug out on me. I just reloaded the game and kept on playing, because the game is just that good.

(Although, to be honest, when posed with a choice between a polished, but limited game and a buggy, but vast and open title, I always choose the latter (STALKER games come to mind). ;)

Wait, what?
How is it mediocre?
Cause it tries to be somewhat logical and not include a crapload of forced dungeons?
Or is the factions?
Cause they are all better detailed than any of FO3's factions excluding Lyons BOS.
Or is the NPC's?
Caus they are far more believable and have far better voice acting and different voice actors than FO3 had.

So what do you mean by the "world is mediocre"?

Perfectly said!

I’m only on lvl 6 - so far the options and mechanics are better, but the atmosphere and story doesn’t touch FO3.

Initially when starting the game, I thought this would definitely by a better RPG. But after playing awhile I realize, for an all-around great role playing experience the story and setting has to grab, and pull you in.

I just haven’t had the “WOW” moments like in FO3.

We’ll see if my opinion changes as I progress in the game.

Didn't play the 1st two fallouts so I am a Fallout Newb.

But FO3 is better then FNV in my opinion. I like the overall atmosphere, The defined good/evil path, the main story line, and my Plasma Rifle that kicked some major ass.

FNV side quests are much better simply because there actually are a bunch instead of a few.

The main reason is that FO3 graphics engine was so much more advanced then what I was used too since I had just graduated from a PS2 to an Xbox 360. That allowed me to really delve into the game because everything was so awesome. FNV uses 99% of the same stuff so the honeymoon has worn off...

I would just like to give some love to Fallout 3 and the DLC too. The DLC was all very different and fun. I love FNV and can't wait to replay in different companion combinations and in different modes. I know we all have our different expectations and I'm no expert on these games but I'm looking forward to many more chapters in the Fallout story. I didn't get to play Fallout 1 and 2 ... but I can't wait for Fallout 14 and 15. :D

The only thing I don't love are the glitches and I hope they're working hard to fix those and make the experience even better.

I can't form an objective opinion yet. I'm not that far into the game. First impressions: it still feels FO3-ish. Although I was pleased to see that traits have returned to FONV.

I don′t get your post. You say that FO3 was better in the main story and in the morals?

In my opinion the main story is the best thing in F:NV and the gray morals just enhances the game. One of the best games i have ever played, had totally gray morals! :celebration: (Deus Ex)

The BoS was too "good" in Fallout 3 (the obvious "knights in the shining armor") in my opinion...

The story in Bethesda's Fallout wasn't cannon in my view.

Considering gamesas does NOT make artillery, none of their products can be described as "cannon." As for canon, that's another issue.

The BoS was too "good" in Fallout 3 (the obvious "knights in the shining armor") in my opinion...

Which was kinda the point. The eastern Brotherhood was intended to be a perversion.

Fallout New Vegas reintroduced some things I liked from the Elder scrolls (plant gathering, alchemy [err...crafting...], morally grey plot lines, and a large number of side quests) and I think these helped fill out the fallout 3.5 experience. I'm glad that they introduced concepts from popular mods, such as weapon modifications, but I wish I could modify that q-35...

As for the Main quest, I like the fact that the MQ gave me a chance to become involved in a wide variety of side quests, but I wish there were more serious consequences for some of the actions I took. (Killing Vulpes Inculta didn't seem to have much of a consequence) Also, I was surprised that
Spoiler
blowing caesar up with three units of C4, killing his guards, and murdering everyone in his camp during the render unto caesar quest
didn't get me into any more trouble than ensuring one of the factions wouldn't deal with me. I was expecting assassins. Also, I was disappointed by the fact that my rep got ruined with the BoS when they shot at me first. In the end, I killed them for being inconvenient.

In short, the Mq is solid, with rewards going to the thorough courier, but murder and mayhem needed to be punished more severely. Also, the lack of an option to tinker with
Spoiler
yes man's programming
was a disappointment for my tyrannical side. The endgame is a difficult and fun experience, and well worth the preparation, though it could stand to be longer.
Spoiler
It's awesome, just short. Getting every limb crippled was worth it.

Other notes:
At this point, the lack of shadows is hurting immersion.
Kudos for making the boomers dangerous.
Science checks no longer make you Captain Obvious.
Unique meshes for unique weapons a nice touch.

For me, Vegas v 3 is a complicated question for me.

Overall I think Vegas is better than FO3 on the average.

However, I think the best anology to use to show my feelings is a sine wave vs a straight line.

FO3 is the Sine wave. It has big peaks, and low troughts, and averages out at a certain point.
NV is the straight line. It offers a more consistent experience with a higher average, but lacks the same peaks as Fo3 (Conversely, it also lacks the troughs).
