Todd Howard has said a few times that Bethesda takes into consideration your portfolio over any degree you may have. Of course, this is a standard practice in the video game industry, as well as animation and any form of media really. If you walk in with a stunning portfolio and no degree and the only other applicant has a degree but a standard or sub-par portfolio, you're getting the job.
So while a degree certainly isn't necessary to actually get a job, a degree is very helpful in becoming experienced enough to make the portfolio that will get you that job. Not necessary, but very helpful.
