Solution for making the boards respond/scroll more quickly o

Post » Fri Mar 11, 2011 5:53 pm

I apologize if this topic is unwarranted. I've browsed these boards on several computers, one an old 1Ghz, one a 2.2Ghz, and one a dual core 3.0Ghz. Only the best of those three scrolls smoothly on these message boards with images turned on.

While I browsed I tried to figure out how to make the experience faster. I tried disabling Java Script, and that didn't work. Finally I disabled the automatic loading of images. It worked! If you chug along on these boards just disable automatic image loading while you browse them. In line images are against the rules anyway right? All you lose are the avatars and emoticons.

At the least this worked for Firefox. Even on that old 1Ghz I can browse fine now.

I suppose this may be of little use to many people, but who knows maybe it will help someone. I've never encountered a message board that slowed lagged graphically on scrolling before this one, but hopefully this simple workaround helps others. Something about the image layout must stress older computers. I figure posting this may help someone else, if it hasn't been said already.

Meh, just blocking the background image is enough to make it bearable, but I agree it needs a proper fixing.

Agreed, this forum is the only page where I visit regularly that lags when scrolling.

Very nice, it's smooth as butter now. The colors are bleh, but at least there's no more choppiness.

Thanks for the theme tip. That's far better than turning off images, and you're right it's the background image found here most likely:
http://www.gamesas.com/images/smilie/games/elderscrolls/elderscrolls-background.jpg

1,920px × 1,200px (scaled to 1,553px × 971px)

That's a LARGE background image. It may be more than that though I didn't test it a ton. Thanks for the tip!

You're right about the background image, I used Stylish and changed the background to #e3ceaa, and it's speedy again.

I'm more concerned that I STILL CAN'T GET MY AVATAR TO ANIMATE!

Worst update ever.

When I save and open up your avatar, it only has one frame of 0.01 second, where did you get it? Perhaps you overwrite the animation with a static?

I've had it in my photobucket for years:

The one on my PC animates fine, but when I upload it here the animation goes away.

You need to reduce the size to 90 x 120 pixels before you upload to here. It does tell you in the avatar section of the rules and there have been several topics on the problem here in the forum.

Except before the update I never had any issues with it, which is why it's annoying.

That is because since the update the avatars are hosted here, not on a remote site like Photobucket. Now you need to put your avatar on your computer, resize to the correct size if you wanted it animated - if not the forum software will do it for you. As you can see from the avatars already here that are animated it is not difficult.

Here, try this:
http://s3.postimage.org/2cetbxm84/triforce_resized.gif

It's resized to a width of 90 (the original picture is only three pixels over).

I used this:
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/gif-resizer-resize-animated-gif-image-files/

I found both with quick Google searches so I'm not vouching for any ads or other things on those sites. Norton says the resizing program is safe.

I understand what is causing it, but that doesn't make it any less annoying that what once worked fine no longer works because an "update" removed a feature. Thanks for the condescending attitude though, that's always helpful.

I did not intend it to come over as condescending, if it did I apologise. Forum update effected everyone's avatars, everyone had to upload them again and to start with we did not realise the problem with animated avatars - now the problem has been found and listed it makes it easier for all to get right.

Thanks, this is much better.

Does anyone have a link to the custom style sheets that people made? Ideally I'd just like to make the overall theme a bit darker.
