Custom soundtracks

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:12 pm

The problem with adding any sort of music to this game is that, as with any other mod, it's really, really hard to find stuff that fits the "feel" of the game. I'm not talking about the [censored] who listens to Iron Man while he's mowing down Cliff Racers (probably as a Mog, no less), because those are the sort of players that clearly aren't interested in preserving the original feel of the game. And as it turns out, not a whole lot of music out there really matches the sort of music you hear in the game.

But one day - purely by accident, mind you - I discovered that a significant chunk of the BTVS soundtrack fits in almost seamlessly with the rest of the soundtrack... or, at least it does in my opinion. I can name specifics if anyone actually cares.

M'kay. As far as I know, the soundtrack has never received any sort of an official release, though the quality of the tracks does seem to indicate that they might have. I got everything from a torrent, so Akatosh only knows where in the hell they came from. I'm fairly certain what I have now are the original titles from said torrent, but I could be wrong:

-Explore-

Buffy, Seasons 2-5 (medley-ish)
Buffy, Seasons 2-7 (medley-ish)
Chosen
Close Your Eyes
Dawn's Ballet
Hush
Little Miss Muffet
Restless
Sacrifice
Sledgehammer
Vision of Jenny
Waking Willow

-Battle-

Cursed
Escape
Massacre
Robot Rampage
War
What's That Do?

So, yeah. I actually uploaded them all somewhere for easy access... not sure whether or not the moderators would frown on me posting a link, though.

For my personal use, the original music is predominant, but I do have one battle score that I like. It's the soundtrack from "Kill Bill", in particular, the battle between Uma thurman and Lucy Liu. It's great classical guitar, and it makes the blood run fast. For Explore I have a little collection of Celtic music that fits surprisingly well.

I can't release any mods with that music of course, but I have a fair collection of music from Jamendo that gives me license...

Kill Bill? Really?

The fight music from the fight between O-Ren and the Bride is the subject of most of my sixual fantasies, and as such would probably feel a bit out of place in Morrowind.

Or perhaps not.

I've always wondered what it sounds like to listen to Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells while wandering through the Grazelands.

That scene would be quite tasteless, but still doesn't give you the right to call those people with whatever that censor mark hides.

While on the one hand I know what you're saying, isn't having a constant soundtrack playing not really in the theme of Morrowind? :P

That aside, I know what you mean, and I do try to keep my music in the "feel" of the game...but what that means to me may be different than you. The core of my music is anything released by Bosa. I then lightly sprinkle in music from the Myst games, LotR, the Narnia movies, various Celtic music, and music by the Native American flutist Vince Redhouse.

You are correct, Sir.

I also have a smattering of various silent tracks of varying lengths in my "Explore" folder.

Yeah, I figured there would be at least one mention of LotR in here at some point.

I actually have quite a few of the tracks from those, as well. I was surprised at how well everything I have ended up meshing together... though, again, I'm well aware I could be biased to hell and back by my love of BTVS >.>

I used to have lots more, but right now I'm using some of the music from the http://www.moddb.com/mods/tamriel-rebuilt1/addons/remastered-tr-music, as well as some Divine Divinity and Celestial Aeon Project music that I got from http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=3151.

I'm also using some of its silent files. :)

For me I use the vanilla music and a few Movie Ost, the tracks divided between Explore and Battle due to their rythmes, epic grandness(is it a brass band, alto, moderato,....) or just the feeling of how it would be coherent with morrowind. my most used osts :
Illuminatti from Angel and Daemons : tempo quick, a few brass, diverse ambiance between the track very good for the wilderness , the discovery feeling and urban action, Conan 1 and 2 for the battles or just wandering,
American McGee Alice : time to die, late to the Jabberwock, vale of tears and a few others while disturbing at first its simple but very eerie melody creep the hell out of me and recall to every adventurer how can Vvardenfell be both wonderfull and unforgivable for everyones,
battles themes and Boss themes from Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary for a few more battle themes,
Ozar Midrashim and the ost from the Blood Omen, Soul Reaver serie for the darker aspect of Morrowind(6th House, Daedric ruins, the Tongs,...)
Last but not least http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1083 simply for the diversity of the music and as hommage to the best rpg ever created, Morrowind being just behind.

As you can see my music directory is quite full even if usually don't use all at the same time, my like my music being more atmospheric than epic without betraying the reflection behind the original score : a magnificent but dangerous land more axed toward a "Terra Incognita" feeling then a plain epic battle rhyme,
combined with my own feeling about Vvardenfell a very harsh island hidding undreamed wonders.

The Witcher soundtrack has a lot of tunes that fit Morrowind perfectly. In fact, practically the whole soundtrack can be used, maybe save for 2 or 3 tavern tunes.
