daggerfall levelling?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 6:30 pm

I've looked at a few levelling guides online for Daggerfall, including UESP. I'm still confused. I'm level 3 now. I'm just not sure how raising skills correlates with leveling. Also, I noticed that when fast travelling, I tend to go up in skills that I never use, like medicine and what not. Seems a little weird.

Medicine is raised by resting, and traveling (because you rest every day during your travels, ect). Not sure what you mean with how raising skills correlates with leveling. I'm pretty sure it works the same as with the other Elder Scrolls games, raise X number of picked skills to advance in level.

To go up a level, you need to raise your leveling skills a certain number of points; I don't remember if that number is eight or ten. All your primary skills, your top two major skills, and your top minor skill count toward leveling.

Unlike in Morrowind and Oblivion, there are no stat raising modifiers associated with which skills were leveled.

Which, in my opinion, is way better.

Is there a benefit to leveling, or do enemies level with you?

On a related topic, how do you train up your running skill? The game lacks a key for running yet that one never goes up. If I was using it I'd expect it to go up since it's under misc. and is so low it should go up easily.

It doesn't lack a key for running. P is the default key for running.

Well, that was silly of me. Took me three checks through that sheet to see the key. And to think I spend my free time and my paid time on computers! Bah! Thanks. Useful key that is (when correctly bound). :)

Run to train Running. Crouch while moving where you can be observed to train Stealth. Do jumping-jacks before resting to train Jumping. Climb buildings (instead of loitering) to train Climbing. Talk tough on the street to train Streetwise. Talk gently at court to train Etiquette. Bash dungeon doors with your fist to increase Hand-to-Hand (and save wear-and tear on weapons).

Things that do not train skills: Swinging or firing a weapon with no target.

Feel free to add to this simple list. But please! Keep the suggestions this simple!

Oh yeah...

Welcome Everybody!

Crouch while moving where you can be observed to train Stealth.

Nope. Stealth is easier when moving slower, not when crouching. (Crouching is for getting through tight squeezes.) If you're actually using cursor based interface, just walk slower than maximum. In view based, hitting the "sneak" key (wherever you happen to have it bound) will bring you down to the appropriate speed.

Whenever you're resting in a city, with no quests or anything bogging you down, and you want to improve your spell-casting, cast your basic cantrip spells that can be obtained by creating them at the Mages Guild. I raised all my magic skills (except Thaumatogery) past 50 in only about an hour.

I think that we are saying the same thing with slightly different words. Crouching has the same effect as slow movement. Hitting one key to achieve the same effect is easier.

While Morrowind and Oblivion both use the same key for Sneak/Crouch in Daggerfall Sneak and Crouch are two different keys.

You can probable map the two functions to the same key.

Nope. If you have two functions mapped to the same key (you can tell because the conflicting functions are red instead of yellow), it won't even let you exit the config screen (just tested that right now).

At anyway, crouching *may* help your sneaking. It's hard to tell since sneak seems to be automatically checked at all times, and can succeed even when walking. But I think there's a better possibility of it working if you're actually holding down your "sneak" key (which I have mapped to ctrl, to keep it close to WASD).

does increasing magic skills have any effect on the spells themselves? (i.e. chance of success, opponents resistance check, etc?) Or is it just for leveling up?

If I remember correctly in Daggerfall most spells get stronger as you level.

A higher skill decreases spell-point cost. Effects that are based on level increase with level. The two go hand-in-hand, of course, but they are not quite the same thing.

Also, do quests get harder as you level up? Because I'm level 5 and I can't seem to kill the seemingly random npcs that try to attack in certain places, when I was able to go through the starter dungeon easily.

Yes. When you enter a dungeon, creatures randomly spawn according to your level. Human opponents have the same level as you, while more powerful monsters will spawn the higher level you are. There are a few static dungeons that are exceptions to this, and a few static opponents. But for the most part, the game does get tougher as your character does.

Leveling is directly related to increasing your skills, but it is a bit convoluted. I could explain it all here, but it really wouldn't help you know when you're going to level up. The best thing is to just play the game, and when you level you level. It's supposed to be a natural process, so just don't think about it :)
