Nobody will talk to me anymore!

I've been trying out Daggerfall again through DOSBox, and have been running around on the island of Betony just for the heck of it. Anyway, I had been doing quests and somehow I ended up becoming hated. I'm not sure how it happened, since my character has only committed a few minor offenses. Anyway, I wasn't too concerned about it since people were still talking to me. I had just completed a Fighter's Guild quest that involved cleaning out a dungeon, and I had just signed up for another quest. When I went outside to ask people for directions, nobody would talk to me. I thought it might have been because of my reputation there, so I traveled to Daggerfall, where I'm considered a common citizen. People there won't talk to me either. There are other provinces where I can talk to people, so I have no idea what's going on. I've completed every quest I signed up for, so it doesn't seem to be a pending quest. Oddly enough, when I check my previous saved games, the problem exists there, too--even though from any one of those saves I know I've talked to many people since then. I only have one save that's not screwed up, and it's the save I made right before I left Privateer's Hold. I number my savegames when I save, and I first noticed the problem around my 40th save. My earliest save that had the problem was my 11th save. Fixsave doesn't help. I suspect I'll have to start over (from the end of Privateer's Hold at least), but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar. And yes, patched the game to .213 before creating a character.

I believe faction reputation goes up and down depending on the quests you completed and how you completed them. you must have done a quest that made your commoner reputation go down while boosting others that might be why people hate you.

There's a second possibility. Did you stand up Lady Brisienna?

Actually, if you've been arrested by the guards several times, there's a chance of your legal reputation ("in the eyes of the law of _____") breaking and going to a ridiculous number like -791463. In which case, not only will everyone hate you, but it'll take an eternity for that reputation to break even at 0 again.

Coincidentally I made a http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=922240&hl= about this some time ago. Turns out our buddy Ferital made a program that can let you negate this. His program, Dagrep can be downloaded http://www.uesp.net/w/images/Dagrep.zip.

NOTE: This is only in the event your reputation is indeed broken and has plummeted to some ridiculous number. If it's something like -4, it'd be more fun to wait it out and do quests to redeem yourself. :)

No. I met with her promptly and have the next stage of the main quest listed in my log.

The reputation system gets a bit buggy at times. There have been times when I suddenly became "Revered" (which is itself a bug, that actually being the worst one you can get) right after leaving Privateer's Hold... I hadn't even had an opportunity to commit any crimes yet.

They're just expecting to hate you. Bretons, man, don't even need a reason to hate people.

After meeting with Lady Brisienna, I only did a few Fighter's Guild quests before moving on to Betony. They were the "kill a single monster in a house" type of quests.

Thanks for the link! I tried it out and my reputation in Betony shows as -13975. That explains a lot. I agree with your point of view. I was willing to accept ordinary faction loss, and in fact tried fast traveling for a few years of time to see if my reputation would be repairable, but clearly this number is way too high for me to redeem myself in-game. I'm still mystified at the reputation loss in Daggerfall though. Only the nobility in Daggerfall and Betony hate me. It appears the nobility in other provinces don't have a problem with me, and my reputation in Daggerfall shows as 0. Regarding Betony, changing my legal reputation to something that makes me disliked ought to work, although I'd like to figure out why the people and nobility of Daggerfall and Betony are mad at me before modifying those numbers. My reputation with individual factions doesn't go any lower than -100 with the ones that don't like me.

I suppose I could always set those to 0, although it still would be nice to know what happened. It's weird that it seemed to affect save games that were acting just fine at the time.

Yeah, the different factions are associated with one another in strange ways. Incurring the wrath of one kingdom often means that some totally random other alignment will be upset with you as well.
