The weather and landscape of Skyrim

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:26 pm

After reading the Game Informer article I was incredibly happy that they weren't going to make Skyrim a completely snowy world, but are instead making it, in my opinion, like Canada. The article said there would be tundra, misty mountains, forests, and so on; it also said that the LOD would be much much much much better than Oblivion's. Another thing I liked was the fact that the wilderness will seem more hostile. The final thing about the weather that got me excited was the snow and how it would fall like real snow and build up. This game is going to be awesome for explorer. :D

And actual river systems.

Well if you check out the magazine you'll see even more weather diversity. You see the fog in the mountains on page 48. Also, we can't confirm that it is a screenshot from Skyrim even though the trees and fog look the same as in other screenshots of Skyrim, but watch the Sound of Skyrim videos and check out his computer background, it's a picture of a forest with fog in it and if it truly is Skyrim then it's going to be gorgeous.

No, it was made by someone else on this forum. Can't remember the thread.

I can somewhat agree, but the part of Canada i'm from only sees snow during winter season...and when the snow comes..theres hardly any greenery or fall forests depicted like those in the Game Informer magazine. It basically looks like the Skyrim everyone was hoping it wouldn't be. :P

I'm in Canada and when I explain the thing I want to see most it's the climate similar to Canada. We get up to 35 celcius but also can go down to -30 celcius. We have a very diverse climate.
I want to see beautiful boreal forests and rocky hills... and huge mushrooms!
OK, maybe not the mushrooms, but something fantastical that I wouldn't see in Canada. Something different and elderscrollsy.

There was never any doubt in my mind that Skyrim would be more than a completely snowy world anyway. Who in their right mind would make a game that boring? Sure, Oblivion might have had too little variety but it would still trump a world entirely made of snow.

People complained that Cyrodiil did not have enough landscape variety (although I disagree)
How will Skyrim have more variety than Cyrodiil?

The biggest skeptism I personally have is map size/type.
Bethesda once again delivers though. Never should of had a doubt.

I posted this earlier in a Weather speculation thread but will repeat here... I'd really love it if they'd include an aurora borealis equivalent in the night sky- if not throughout Skyrim, at a certain latitude range.

I think Red Dead Redemption raised the bar for in-game weather simulation. It's time for Bethesda to reclaim the crown!

And since this is about weather and landscapes... Please can we have avalanches? Accidental ones? Triggerable ones?

I could see trigger-based, scripted avalanches being in, but nothing random.
