Idea On Doors: Entering or Trespassing?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 1:37 pm

While playing Oblivion (felt in the mood because of all the Skyrim hubba :foodndrink: ) I was recently trying to enter a home as required to complete a quest. The owner of the home who I was suppose to speak to was at home walking around, this being late at night. Probably being around 11PM I approached the door and saw the customary red icon meaning it was trespassing. Entering anyways so I could complete the quest, I approached the NPC who proceeded to tell me to "Get out!".

.........strange considering I was bringing them good news about the completion of whatever dangerous quest they just sent me on, but okay fine.

So I proceed to speak with them and their face changes entirely. They are no longer angry and proceed to congratulate, thank, and reward me. When we are done speaking their face then again becomes angry as they proceed to warn me that this is my last chance and if I do not leave they will be "forced to call the guards".

.......once again, a very strange way to show gratitude.

Okay people I'm not OCD. I realize that many of the ideal things we would love to see in games are down right impossible today or just plain too time consuming. But what I would like to see is a bit more immersion. What I propose to make this a reality and fix the aforementioned problem is simple.

Knocking.

Just add a simple option to either break and enter or knock. When you have to talk to someone to complete a quest you would then have the option to knock, and then would be let in without trespassing to complete your quest. If there is no quest but you simply wish to enter a place legally you could knock and depending on the NPC's disposition and other variables including your own stats, you may be allowed to enter.

I know that cells would make some of the more practical aspects of this impossible, but after the above calculations are made, a simple message of " *insert random name* : Go away! " would more than suffice if you weren't allowed to enter. Get where I'm going with this? If the NPC lets you in then you would enter like regular. They just wouldn't be hostile.

Simple way to make the game more immersive and realistic. Because if you were visiting someones house late at night, you'd knock before entering. (maybe  )

It's not like I need something like this in the game but it would be nice.

What'cha think?

Being able to knock would be great. But not just on quest NPC houses, on all houses. In the daytime you it shouldn't really be legal to walk into someones house. You would have to knock. When you knock and someone is home they open the door and speak to you. Or you can simply break in, your choice.

Yes, knocking on doors may be useful for thieves too as a diversion method. Drop some gold in front of the door, knock and wait until the npc goes to tell all the neighbors how the gods sent them a sign.

Yes, I agree with this.

I wonder if the team has thought about this.

What I think is Oblivion is right. I agree with the NPCs, I too don't like being disturbed at night whether friend or family. Well thats just me.

I think a knocking system would be great. Though I didn't find it that surprising that the NPCs are angry with you being in their house late at night even though they sent you to do something for them. I mean, you just broke into their house, of course their going to be angry. But yeah, knocking is a great idea. Fable 2 had it perfectly but they only used it like twice in the entire game.

Great idea. I love the simplicity. Of course assuming you mean you won't ALWAYS be let in when you knock even if you completed a quest for a person and that sometimes they'll meet you at the door, thank you and close the door in your face because it's late they're tired and have work in the morning. All that being accounted for it's a very good idea.

I can only imagine myself doing this to the most comically inept bosmer I could find, for humor's sake.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I never really liked the whole "Oh hey, stranger in my house, what can I help you with?"

I think it would add to the immersion, and also to the strategizing.
I'd like to see it in the game for sure.

You should be able to knock and it'd be cool if you could break the door down (for those who hate to pick locks and prefer brute force).

But wait, how would an NPC answer the door if interiors are separated from exteriors?

And that right there is why it wouldn't work :/

They could simply say "Who is it?" from outside. You would hear their voice muffled from the other side of the door. Cue dialog choices. Based on your speechcraft skill, they may either let you in, or tell you to go home and come back tomorrow.

Could be done by having the knock animation temporarily spawn the NPC behind the door, with a muffling sound effect applied to their voice. It would give the appearance of talking through the door. Then you'd try to convince the NPC to unlock the door.
